    AR 15 Lower Question

I would like to purchase an AR15 lower for my boyfriend for Christmas. I am aware that it will need to be in his name so I will have to go the gift card route. My question is the local dealer has a Smith & Wesson MMP for $250 after tax and background check. One is this a good lower and two is this a good price? The store is called Discount Gun Mart in San Diego, has anyone been there or know of anyother places I should shop around in San Diego? I want to make sure I get him a gift certificate at the right place. Thanks!

It's a good lower, but a bit pricey.

To give an example, J&J Armory in Santa Ana has spikes tactical lowers usually for about 135$ before tax/DROS.

A decent lower should come in under 200$ after tax and DROS.

Unfortunately, being in Orange County, I don't know of any places to help you out in the San Diego area.

Thanks I'll keep that in mind I have family up there so I could always swing by Santa Ana if something in SD doesn't come up.

You can also try National Police Supply in Vista to see if they have anything your boyfriend would want.

              Stripped lower = build himself.

I think it would be a better idea If he gets an actual gift..exacmpl..buy a complete kit..

                Upper
                bullet button
                lower parts kit
but stock..and just give him all that..now that woujld be KICK ***!!

you dont need to dros any of that..then all he has to do is go buy himself a lower and dros it

thats if you wanna spend around 5-600$
*DISCLAIMER* I probably misspelled alot of things, and i dont care...

The whole kit is a little out of my budget plus he wants his lower by the end of the year. Is there a way I can buy him the lower and just a few things to go with it. I really have no idea how this works. I don't really know where to start. Thanks for calling me a good girlfriend

If you want to add a few extra bits, get the stripped lower plus a parts kit (~$60) and maybe a decent grip like an ergo or magpul MIAD (20-35$). Don't get a buttstock unless you know how he wants to go (carbine/collapsible or rifle/fixed).

Marie, there's a bunch of good opinion and knowledge here. I think we can all image what we would want our significant other give us. Regardless of what you get him, I'm sure he'll treasure it. For us to give you the best suggestion we would first need to know your budget. No matter where you go the background check (DROS) is going to be $25 and tax is just tax.

An AR comes in basically 2 parts, an upper half and a lower half. The lower half is by far the less expensive of the two.

These are the 4 basic things that would need to be purchased for your boyfriend to have a complete rifle. (I'm not recommending any site/brand in particular just using this to illustrate the point)

                            The lower half

                            1) The lower receiver - This is the only part which needs a background check ~ $150

                            2) The parts kit - All the little parts that go inside the lower receiver ~ $70

                            3) The but stock - There are a million different types/styles ~ $80

                            The upper half

                            4) The upper receiver - Can be purchased as 1 unit or in pieces, again a million different types/styles ~ $600

I was actually in you boyfriends shoes not too long ago. My girlfriend decided to buy me an upper receiver for our anniversary (if that doesn't say NRA love I'm not sure what does lol). I can honestly say that if she would have just used her gut instinct and picked out any old upper, I wouldn't have been too happy because that's a very "complicated/personal" piece to buy. There's so many variants it's astonishing.

If I was to make a suggestion, I would have you purchase the 3 items required to have a complete lower half. Receiver, parts kit, and stock.

Many of the guys here would agree that a lower is a lower is a lower, and many would also agree that the LMT brand kicks ***. So if my girlfriend was picking me up a little surprise I would love to get this http://www.rainierarms.com/?page=sho...product_id=124

And yes you are a kick *** girlfriend

Forgot to mention 2 other things.

                              1) Gun Broker has a find a dealer thing on their site. http://gunbroker.com/User/DealerNetwork.asp

                              2) You can find really good deals on this stuff by using the links at the top of this site. They rotate as you refresh the page. As long as you find an Off List Lower friendly dealer near you then you can order the lower receiver online, have it shipped to the dealer, and just pay normally a $25-$50 transfer fee.
