Insurance from carriers:
USPS: the best. They have an ONLINE site for filing claims for insured parcels. Including a way to attach photos of the damaged item. The shipper (not the recipient) holds a numbered receipt from which USPS computers can retrieve the amount of the insurance and the postage. I do not even have to bring the item in for inspection, nor does any inspector come to my door. The online picture attachment suffices. Full amount insured (to receiver)+ postage (to shipper) is refunded. And you get to keep the item.
USPS strategy: few items are damaged. The insurance fee income to USPS exceeds payouts. So they do not hassle the claimant. Insured package fees are a goldmine income to USPS, one of the few areas they make a very nice profit.
UPS: every parcel is insured. So filing claims is long and takes paperwork. They do not treat the claimant as royally as does USPS. Still they do pay off in time.
Fedex: I don't know, have no experience.
Grayhound: The best shipper for fragile items. Buses have real soft suspension, unlike the brown truck. Everything is hand carted on and off the buses. Low volume. No automated assembly line to bounce parcels. Claims have more paperwork and longer wait then even UPS. Still they do pay off consistently. They are also by far the cheapest delivery rates for large, very heavy items. Slow deliveries however.

Don't ask, don't tell. Just insure for the full amount.
parts kits that way, as well as ammo. Basically anything of value that I didn't want sitting on the porch for hours.
