    Moving my guns?

So we just sold our house and moving out if California

Anyways when I move my guns, I have a few questions for those who might have been there done that....
I have several rifles with scopes several without. I have a few pistols as well. My question is how do I move these without damaging them. I am very limited on space availible. I was thinking of wrapping them with cloths and maybe laying them either in the safe (which would be laying down in trailer) or I have our Yakima box for the top of the Jeep I can maybe put them into?

Should I remove the scopes? If so will they need to be resighted when I reinstall scopes?

I have some gun cases I can put some in but some with the scopes won't fit in cases.

My wife thinks I should wrap them in cloths and put them.in the back seat of the truck I'm driving pulling the trailer, I'm thinking it's a bad idea cause we're doing it in 2days which means we're gonna be stopping somewhere over night and I don't want to risk them being stolen...

    What do you guys think?

    Thanks in advance

I wouldn't leave them in the safe unless they're held in tightly with those bore rods or something, but the shelves would have to be fastened and not just resting on the little clips. Just wrap them in blankets, gun socks, cases, etc.

And the scopes will have to be re-zeroed if they're mounted without a QD. People re-zero with plain old rings because when you tighten the scope down, it sits at a slightly different angle almost every time.

And congrats on your move out of CA! Hopefully some day I can join you as this state is a lost cause... and not just for gun ownership.

I should have explained that a little better.... With the safe on its back all shelfs would be out and only the guns wrapped with cloths or whatever will be in the safe...

Still don't think it would be a good idea?

use blankets and towels in the safe if space is that limited.....but use as many blankets as possible.

or build a 2x2x5ft box with notched cross members for the guns to ride in.cost is to build about $25 and is lockable

Sounds like they should be fine. Wrap each rifle individually with blankets/cloths, then cushion them with more moving blankets/whatever.

Just remember to take them out before you upright/move the safe again. Also, opening the door on it's back might be a pain if it's a huge safe and the door weighs 100+lbs.

Yea I wast thinking I would wrap them and then fill empty space with towels or cloths or what ever I could.... Right on I was playing it out in my head but with everything going on wasn't sure it it was a solid idea.

I dont know what type of safe you have
If its a high end safe it may have a delocker made of glass
If you have one of these types of safes and laying the safe on it back the puts the glass in weak position. If this glass breaks you will need a lock smith to open the safe for you. So be careful.
My friend ordered a safe that had this feature trucking company handled the safe roughly during transport and the glass pain broke. he contacted the safe company they had the shipping company pick up the safe. they sent him a new one.

I like this idea too. Are you talking about building a box for each gun?

Have you built one? Any pics if you did?

                      Wow like that huh?

Don't think it's a lack of caring, but I'm not gonna go buy 15 hard cases for one move. No offence not a great idea, but thanks

You can get cheap hard cases for $20 or less and them sell them after the fact, you wont get all your money back but you wont have damaged guns either.

If you are parking the truck and trailer at a motel at night be sure to park in a way that won't allow meth heads to unhook the trailer and tow it away. That happened to another Calgunner who was moving out of state.

How many guns? If it not too many I'd ask some friends or family to borrow cases. I have some cheap cases and if turned right I can usually fit two rifles in each. Otherwise I'd remove the scopes, wrap them up really well and put them in the safe.
