Do our armed forces guys wear ear protection during combat?

I have always wondered....

Yes, they fall out, you lose them and they just get blown away

I didn''t and I don't know any that did. Now during practice we wore protection all the time.

Hearing is one of your most valuable assets in combat and plugging your ears was not a good idea for me and those I knew.

I wasnt a soldier, I was a Marine. And I wore 1 ear plug in my right ear, would put it in right before we stepped out of the gate and would take it out once we got back. Of course the time my buddy dropped down on my left side with his flash suppressor about even with my ear but a foot away didnt help my hearing in my left ear LOL.

The doctors say that might have helped as to why I did not receive a concussion when I got wounded by an IED during a dismounted patrol. I got hit on my right side and got peppered good but no TBI. I had my earplug in, who knows.

It's a mixed bag. I know I always wear the foamies when I'm doing training and I've heard from some of my grunt friends that they're being issued electronic ear protection.

It's getting better.

I got issues some fancy surefire earpro that I wore sometimes. But normally it was no ear pro. I would rather hear the click of an ak switching to fire or other quiet but important sounds that worry about hearing loss. I have horrible ear, I hate it and it sucks but I would rather not be able to hear than be dead.

Now I have electric headphones that I can also hookup to my radio, not the quiet pro bull****, and I wear those. I am not on a combat deployment though so I don't know how much I would actually use them if I was patrolling everyday.

never got issued or known anyone that did. we weren't infantry or combat troops but we went outside the wire a good bit.

I was shooting outdoors near Oroville with a family member in the NG over the weekend. He did not grab any ear protection and walked up to the firing line with my AR and let a couple rounds go.

He told me that his ear rang for a few minutes, and that he forgot just how loud the civilian rifles are compared to the A2 or whatever version he was issued in the sandbox.

My Father was a radio op in the navy on a destroyer in Vietnam. He had to head out on deck during a barrage of cannon fire. Which he says was so loud it burst his ear drum in his right ear. They didn't issue ear plugs. He has always told me when those guns went off it didn't matter where you were on ship, the noise was loud and the whole ship vibrated.

Not that that has anything to do with this topic... other than a historical perspective of no issue ear plugs.

I was a radio operator deployed and couldn't hear traffic if I had plugs in. Thankfully I have minimal loss from those tours.

I drank the cool-aid at Front Sight this past April and bought the top of the line Sport-Ear hearing protection/enhancer. I have had them about 2 weeks and they are awesome. I wear them all day except when I sleep. Great product.

I think the correct answer would be they are provided with hearing protection. Some choose to not use it. Most of the time it gets lost, or just to nasty you don't want to use it.

I was a Range Safety Officer on base for a match and it was easy to tell who was military. When they came to the firing line to start their stage, I would mention eyes and ears. Their response was we train as we fit. Since this match was on base, I had no choice but to let them shoot the stage without eyes and ears.
