And for the 4th time....Which is why you can't use these stats to argue that due to a loss of guns rights there is an increase in X crime. Far too many variables involved.

The Aussies haven't been British subject for some time. They DO have a tendency to trust their .gov. Around 1990-ish they actually voted to allow random stops by the popo to look for drunk drivers. For teh chi'druhn, of course.

I WAS told by an Aussie that when the gun roundup of '97 happened PVC pipe was in pretty short supply nationwide.

With all the things that can kill you in Australia I figure you would want all the guns you could have.
But common sense isn't all that common.

Typical bad logic anti-gun article. Some facts to put it into proportion:

                    1) Homicide rates are relatively the same before and after the gun ban. They are trending downward as they are in all developed countries. (Source: Australian Government AIC)

                    2) Even firearm homicide rates are relatively the same. (Source: Australian Government AIC)

                    3) Australians "gave up their guns". This is a very misleading concept. Gun ownership is at 5% in Australia, and that's down from 8% in 1996. Giving up "one third" of very little = very little. So several thousand guns where bought back by the government, big deal. Australians never had that many guns to begin with.

                    4) If the us Government where to institute the same policy, that is buying back 1/3 of all guns in the USA, they would have to buy 100 million guns. At the prices the Australians paid to remove a few thousand guns from their "society", the US government would have to spend 50 billion dollars (based on $350 per firearm).

                    Anyone laughing yet?

                      $350 X 100 million = 50 Billion?

Something looks awful funny with that math.

You can also point to Britain which has obviously done a similar thing. Sure their gun crime went down but their violent crime and burglary skyrocketed.

You forgot the costs of the bureaucracy created for the buyback and the costs associated with the implementation, labor, and management. Then there's the cost of destroying the weapons. 50 Billion is more like it.

Does anyone know if other developed countries have the same quantity of criminal gang activity that the US does? I've been browsing government stats on the FBI and national gang center websites and a majority of our violent crime can be attributed to gang members.

I don't know of too many developed countries with 350+ million people in them.
But Japan, as populated as it is (half of the US population) has a gang problem (Yakuza) but even they don't use firearms to commit their crimes.
I think last year 4 people were killed with guns.

Owning a gun is not easy in Japan. But that doesn't mean some people don't try! As part of an hour-long special called Global Lessons on Guns hosted by

We need these laws here in the US. If you think you need a gun, what you actually need is psychotherapy for yiur paranoia or violent tendencies"
