    Loading your Weapon

For those of you with Semi Automatics and magazines (rifle or pistol) -- how do you load the firearm. I was at a range the other day testing out a Sig P230. My wife slammed the magazine in and went to pull the slide and the damn thing was jammed.. It appears on the P230 you need to gently push in the magazine. I seem to feel that puts you at quite a disadvantage when loading under pressure if you have to rely on not putting to much pressure on the magazine or else the guns ceases to function. Am I just crazy or is the "proper" technique really to gently push the magazine in.

Also, when I say slammed, I don't mean she was grabbing a hammer, but more like putting in the mag with a slapping motion like some people pack their cigs.

Unless she hit it with the force of a mack truck I would blame this on the gun malfunctioning. The mag catch should have caught the mag and prevented it from going to far into the mag well. After all they are guns they arent made to be babied they are made to be used in battle conditions.

BTW: I voted push it in tenderly, even though I usually push it in firmly especially on my 92FS because the mag well is tighter than most of my other guns.

It probably doesn't need to put in tenderly, it just needs a firm push. Slapping a mag in the mag well is all "Hollywood". No need for it. It will only do what you said just happened. If you do it hard enough, it may (I've done it) release the slide from it's locked position. Wqatch your fingers. Ouch!!

Yeah, she's done that a few times (made the slide release). I guess she hits it a little harder then I do ...

I think it should be inserted firmly. If you try to insert nicely you may not lock the mag in place, especially in rifles.
The only pistol I can repeatedly slam a mag in and make the slide close is on a glock. It only does this when I want it to. I consider that one less step to deal with.
I can not imagine that a woman is slamming that fresh mag up into the frame, so hard that it makes the weapon mis load. If this is the case I would ask her to be gentle or replace the weapon.

I was taught this is common "No No". People tend to do this thinkin' they invented something new. It may (just may) cause a failure to feed.

This is what the range guys asked (we gently insert the mag).. it was a rental so I attributed part of it to the weapon being really dirty. Several of their rentals were having issues late in the day (10pmish) when we were there. E.g., a Smith & Wesson .45 (forgot model) that required me to push the slide forward on the first round after I had pulled it back to chamber when the mag was inserted...

Swift and firm push. Looks kind of like a slap, but it's actually a smooth motion (I swear!).

My CZ52 will mis-feed if the magazine is inserted too briskly if the chamber is open. The top round will actually come part-way out of the magazine, but I can't remember if that's with all the mags, or just the aftermarket ones... I'd imagine that if you go gorilla with your mags, this could happen to other handguns, since the CZ52 is only carrying 8 rounds in the mag, and the bullet weights are only about 90 grains.

Now, if you're too gentle, some mags won't seat all the way, especially if you're loading on a closed chamber. My P220 likes a firm push with to seat a full mag on a full chamber, and most ARs seem to.

With the AK, it's neither a slap or a gentle push. It's catch the front hook and rock it back (firmly ) till it clicks.

I know its not wise to insert a mag as described..but I did think it was kinda cool since it was shown to me by an IRS agent I shoot with. He has the Glocks.

Is not something I practice and besides I only own HK weapons.

                      actually IRS investigation agents...

i knew of a local woman who was an IRS agent who tragically killed herself when she broke up (or her BF did the breaking up)...

that's when i learned some agents can carry...

I guess you learn something new everyday. No he isn't behind a desk checking your tax return. He is in the investigation unit. They are issued Glocks & speer gold dot for the agents. My other shooting partner is Border Patrol and they are issued Hk USPc .40 & use 155gr Winchester Ranger.

+1 - briskly seating the magazine with the palm or heel of the hand works best. You're not trying to test your grip on the gun, so you don't pound it in but you are not gentle about it either.

I usually put a magazine in fairly gently, but then slap the bottom to make sure that it's locked and just for good measure.

i have all ways know that if you insert it with a good push, not hard, but strong the gun will approve of it, and not have a problem.

i did vote slap it in, but with a good push is better, and a eumph to make sure it is all the way in.

better to use a bit of authority getting it in, not babied.

you do not want to be "that guy" with it always falling out.
