Now that SoCal has stopped smoldering, wifey asked a good question. If we had to evacuate and check into a hotel, and we emptied out the safe and took our guns with us (in locked containers of course), could we take our guns into the hotel room with us or would they have to stay in the trunk. Assume that the only way in is thru the busy lobby and past the front desk. I'm sure that the reaction would partly depend on hotel policy but legally could they prevent the move?

Your hotel room is considered your residence while you're there from what I recall. So same rules apply there as your home. -
While I'd feel safer having them in the room with me instead of out in my car, you also have to be aware of who has access to your room while you're there and when you're not there. Look for the posted signs that say "not responsible for lost items" in the lobby and behind the counter, meaning either the manager and/or cleaning folks who have a key to your room could always go through your stuff and grab something when you're not around. Not saying that it's a common occurrence, but you never know and probably don't think about it until it happens to you.
Sure you can always lug your firearms in locked containers to & from your car every time you leave, but if you have a lot of heavy containers to carry then that's going to get old very fast.Comment

I've never asked, I just take my stuff with me. Nobody has ever seen a rifle case and told me I couldn't take it into the room.People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

Don't ask don't tell.
I will not be staying in a place that will leave my family defenseless. My firearm goes were I go when we will be staying some were other than home.
I just stayed in a motel in AZ this weekend. My firearm stayed on the night stand.

On many occasions, I have checked into a hotel with a group of guys with our rifles slung in Eberlestock packs.
The Eberlestock pack carries the rifle muzzle down, but the buttstock is sticking out of the pack above your head.
We usually get a comment asking if we are hunting or if we are a law enforcement team.
The funnier comments come from the guests in the elevators...Randall Rausch

FWIW...at the big gunshow in Tulsa OK, my friend and I passed the front desk of the lobby at least a dozen times carrying all sorts of cased, and uncased long guns. The gentleman from India behind the counter didn't say a word.
We were among many staying there for the show, so guns were pretty much everywhere, all the time.
But...we are in California.
I would be discrete, and say nothing.
Most guys I saw that transported large amounts of guns around use roadie or tradeshow type cases that are wheeled, or can be dollied.
They can also be locked up quite well, are very well made, and can be chained to a permanent structure within the room itself if you do need to leave.Comment
