I had a 6.5-21x44 on my Savage MKII for a while ... that was overkill. It has a 3-9 now.

Like everyone has mentioned. All depends on your intended purpose for the rifle and most importantly what you can afford. If you are able to drop $1k+ on a good glass more power to you. When I go shooting with my co-workers they always talk about how I'm a "baller" and have nice equipment. While, they are running the wal-mart Tasco specials. I always tell them they have to put in trigger time and save up for a decent optic. Heck! Even a Leopold VX1 is better and those are pretty much considered entry level. My optics can't even compare to most of the optics I've seen on here but I'm still a "baller" because of my $600 Zeiss and I'm able to do MOA.

This 22 can hit a bee at 1000 yards:

Lol.. jk. Use to me my sons and we mounted the huge scopes for giggles.

There is nothing wrong with a high magnification scope on a .22lr or an air rifle IF it works best for it's intended purpose.

            I think it looks good.

After my .308 build, A long range .22lr is on the list. I'm guessing there 16x would be the top end right due to the bullet's range; seems like 200 yards max for minute of rabbit. I have to look into sighting a scope for sub sonic, maybe more accurate at longer range I just hope the best .22 ammo doesn't end up being almost the same price.

Magnification is second to clarity but, I have known many competitive shooters who use optics with 20X to 40X magnification on their .22lrs when shooting OFF HAND.

I have 8-40x on two of my rifles. One is a 24" Custom AR (.223) and the other is an AMT Custom Lightning (.22LR).
