Transporting Collection From CT to CA

Thanks for all the replies based on the the help here it's ok for us to transport this since our route won't pass through New York and New Jersey our route so far we will pass through

1. Connecticut 2. Pennsylvania 3. Ohio 4. Indiana 4. Illinois 5. Iowa 6. Nebraska 7. Colorado 8. Utah 9. Las Vegas 10. Then Home in California.




It's a long drive and this could take 4 to 5 days atleast driving around 8 to 10 hours a day .

You CAN'T go CT -> PA; they don't share a border.

It is bordered by Rhode Island to the east, Massachusetts to the north, New York to the west, and Long Island Sound to the south.

You basically have three choices.
1. Go through New York.
2. Hire a ship to take your van by sea from Connecticut to Delaware.
3. Drive North through Canada and re-enter the U.S. in Detroit.

#2 and #3 are pretty much out of the question. Cost prohibitive and Canada don't like guns.

There is risk, but you will have to either ship all the firearms, or drive through New York.

I've driven from Ca. to Ma. and back several times with firearms. The best route thru NY state is I-84 from Danbury CT. to Matamoras Pa. across the Newburgh bridge (approx. 90 mi. thru NY state).

You just need to plan your trip well and know the laws in the states that you will be travelling thru and staying overnite. Handgunlaw.us is a good resource if you are travelling with firearms.

+1 on I84, this is the best route to take. Just don't plan on stopping in Scranton once you get over the border into PA. That place is a real $#!/hole.

Driving through NY state, obey the speed limits, don't stop for gas or food or any other reason, and if a cop does pull you over make sure he doesn't have cause or permission to search your vehicle.

Do these simple things and you'll be just fine.

Oh, and avoid Illinois too. Veer south.

Dont sweat it too much, like said above, obey speed limits and dont stop. I assume you will be transporting more than guns, like clothes and household items. So pack the guns in first and everything else on top. Dont tell the cops you have guns, dont give them a reason to ask. You should probably have a letter written by your relative stating that he gives you permission to transport his personal item, signed by both of you and a witness, with contact info and photcopy of ids. It might help if johnny law starts to question what you got.
Maybe read up on 4th amend Search n seizure law in NY, i believe some states do not allow search of your trunk/lock spaces without a warrant/arrest/emergency circumstances. Anyone here know for sure ??
Dont have anything in the driver area (plain view doctrine) which will give probable cause to search the truck.

After driving thru congestion in Scranton a couple of times, I now bypass the place by taking I-380 between I-84 and I-80. It adds about 20 mi./15 min. to my trip but its less aggravating.

Thanks for all the replies , and I apologize for not getting back to this sooner. So far I'm kinda hesitant to do drive any other options like shipping the whole collection in pods or uhauls ubox .
I also read somewhere that a commercial shipping might be able to ship all the collections at once. Anybody ever tried doing this ?

I don't think there's any reason you can't ship. The only thing you'd probably want to ensure is that there is nothing in the terms of service for your chosen shipping company that you violate. It wouldn't be illegal just would be harder to make a claim if needed.
