Did I get ripped off? 91/30.

Hey guys, long time lurker first time poster.
After wanting one forever I finally caved in and decided to purchase my first gun.
I always knew it would be a 91/30 mosin nagant. I walked into the gun-store and asked to see the gun I had called in ahead about.
$202 was more than I was used to seeing mosins going for but I was so giddy to be just holding one that it didn't even sink in. I was told to inspect the gun but felt so in the moment that I didn't really even inspect anything. I honestly couldn't even tell you if it had a hex or round receiver.

I do know it comes with a bayonet, and an oil container, no information on sling or ammo pouches. Didn't occur to me to ask at the time. The attendant at the gun store said it was good to go straight to the range so I'm assuming it has already been scrubbed of cosmoline. I also noticed that the notches for the sling had the metal inlays missing. My entire process of inspection was pulling the bolt in and out a couple of times, and looking at the butt-plate, receiver and bolt for serial numbers but not even checking to see if they matched up. (I was honestly just frazzled, been in a gun store only once before.)

Getting to the point:
1) What could make the rifle so much more expensive than normal, would a store purposefully overcharge for no reason?
2) What should I look for when I go to pick it up in 9 days... are there any deal-breakers that if I see I should ask for a refund.
3) did I royally screw myself by not making this thread before initial purchase?

Never hurts to ask in advance. Fairly helpful group here...most of the time. I paid $89 for my Mosin about two years ago at Big5 and got to look at a couple they had and pick. I did ask questions prior and have owned rifles before but I also figured for a c note to get one of WWII's main battle rifles was worth the potential risk of getting a dud. It wasn't a dud and packs a wallop but man that cosmoline was a pain to clean. I've heard and think I saw them at Big5 for around $180 now so $202 doesn't sound terribly bad. Google search is your freind on what to look for. Bolt, receiver and barrel are the most important items.

When I bought mind about three years ago I paid 130 otd. It was the hexagonal rifle that everyone wants. I think 202 is way too much for the amount of mosins there are.

Also, it may have cosmoline so I personally wouldn't shoot it until after it got a proper cleaning.

If you paid too much it wasn't by much. The $89-$99 deals at Big 5 are long gone now. I toy with the idea of picking up one too, but I don't want to deal with all that cosmoline.

closer to 300 with fees and locks and ammo, taxes, etc.

Ripped off isnt the correct description. Maybe you could have done better if you shopped around or had more knowledge about the rifles. But education costs money, so lesson learned.

At the end of the day ( or ten days ) you're still going to have solid powerful centerfire rifle for around 2 bills. Not a bad deal in the grand scheme of things.

Also my grandfather served in WWII with one (Red Army Tank Brigade).
Pretty sure he didn't get to pick and choose his rifle either haha.

I have a couple I paid 50 bucks for, but that was before everything shot up with the panic.

as for the hardware, it's a soviet product, expect some inconsistencies.

No real deal breakers unless you find a big crack running down the barrel.

I paid about the same for my hex 91/30, after buying it online. So long as the bore is good you should be fine with it.

No kidding, I started with one, now depending on how you count it(total I own vs the ones in my home) I have between 6 and 12 of them.

The best deal I was able to get last year was $150. So; I don't think you way overpaid. When people talk about their $80 mosins; that was 3-4 (or more) years ago. Those deals are gone.

I wouldn't sweat it if I were you, you give them pieces of paper and they're going to give you a very historic, strong, reliable rifle that works with a minimal amount of parts.
something your grandfather might have not even been given at first, going into battle.

I'm sure you've seen "Enemy at the gate" ... "one gets the the rifle and the other one follows until the man with a rifle is dead".

how much is that worth to you?

and I have removed cosmoline before and if the salesman was correct and it's ready to go ,which of course you should check, that's worth a few dollars right there, in my opinion. all those low prices that you have been seeing or hearing about ...usually the rifle is filled with cosmoline
