Ballistics Gel is a test medium, the standard 12" was set because in real life there is clothing, bone, barriers, etc. to get through.

To address the person who said .75" can cause an animal to bleed out; Self Defense is about stopping a threat. Sometimes that means incapacitation due to hitting the Central Nervous System, sometimes that means taking the will out of the assailant to do harm to you. Either of those hits can kill, both of them don't necessarily mean death either. Key point : Stop the Threat. No other reason for self defense.

I can't wrap my head around people looking for an unconventional means to stop a threat. Modern hollow point ammo/00 LEO defensive loads are what the police use and it is effective. Deviation from that adds another complexity to your situation after the shoot. Spend your energy and money on training if you don't think you are good enough to stop an attacker with a conventional load in handgun or shotgun.

I hadn't ever heard of cut shells before. I'm not too sure why in the hell somebody would advocate doing this for anything that could be a potentially life threatening situation (SD/HD type scenario) given that a box of 00 buck or slugs can be found for....what, $10?

I wouldn't ever trust my life to some kind of modified ammo unless I had absolutely no other option.

I've been asked about cut shells a couple of times over the years; your link gives me a video to refer them to.
People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

              Why not just buy slugs?

I would love to see a side by side with glaser safety slugs...

12 inches of penetration is less important when you pulp a cantaloupe shape into the insides of the guy.

I use oo buck and slugs because they feed reliably.

If all I had was a double barrel and some cut shells I wouldnt feel poorly armed.

Who has been out shooting people lately"other than cops and gang members?"
California's politicians and unionized government employees are a crime gang that makes the Mexican drug cartels look like a Girl Scout Troop in comparison.

Are you replying to my post? What "kind of energy" are you referring to?

I've had a few people ask me to test this one. I'll have to move it up the list.

The Ballistic gel block almost leapt completely into the air. That's a lot of transferred energy. You can use a baseball bat and potentially kill someone if you transfer enough energy and yet have 0 penetration.
I wonder how much energy is needed to destroy organs. I'm off to do some research!

Oh good! I was hoping to put some solid testing info out there.

The glaser is on the list of future videos. I've got way too many video ideas and not enough time haha

People have been killed with bean bag rounds and rubber bullets. I don't think you get much penetration, if any at all, with those rounds. I don't recall the shooter breaking their arm when they used them either.
