Big 5 was ok this time

Last saturday I went to the great Big5 near me. Decent 308 (not match) was $20/20. There were Smith+Wesson and CRKT knives begging for release from storage on sale. The sunglass case was a bonanza of savings too, expensive stuff in the $20-30 range.

Over $400 in shwag for about $150 mostly the 308. Makes you wonder about markup and Chinese manufacturing and computerized algorithmic pricing.

Sure puts the fun back into a dreaded sunday afternoon out shopping........

The one thing I learned from Big 5 is if you like a knife that used to be $140 and is now $19.99, buy two, one beater one slicer.

I've always had very good experiences at my local big 5s, they managers (even the younger guys) at the gun counter are polite, and timely with the paperwork stuff.

I'm never going to big 5 again. Last time I was there it was to buy a Marlin 795 .22, they treated me like a criminal the entire time. The other customers stared at me like I was a freak.

I'd rather go to Turners.

My local Big 5 is great. I've dealt mostly with the women in their store. I went in there to buy ammo and the lady who sold me my shotgun remembered me and said, "we sold you a 12 gauge, right?" Most of them are into shooting too, which was pleasantly surprising and fun for chats.

Big 5 is usually understaffed, and you will find yourself standing around for half an hour to buy 1 box of ammo. Aside from that, they are surprisingly knowledgable.

Don't ever tell them you are buying a gun as a gift for someone else. Maybe it is not a good idea at a regular LGS either but I have never been turned down by a LGS before, like I have at B5.

usually have good experiences at B5. The problem is for me at least is when there is a good knowledgeable salesperson or manager, they quit or get transferred in a couple of months.

Concord Big5. Ask for Tyson. He has managed that store for over 20 years and will take great care of you. No kidding.

Had good luck with my local Big5. They brought a shotgun in for me that they did not have in stock, from another store. That shotgun turned out to be slightly defective, so they brought in another one. Had to wait another 10 days for the 2nd one, which ticked me off, but that's the law I suppose and I have no complaints about the way they took care of me.

Wait, I do have 1 complaint. How come I never see those bulk boxes of CCI Blazer on the shelf anymore? Used to get them on sale for $19 or $20. Still got about 5K of them, but when I asked the manager about them recently, she laughed and said, "We haven't seen those in over a year now and I'm not sure if we ever will again."

Here's my Big 5 story:

I bought 2 mosins a couple days away from each other at the same store.

When I picked up the first one, they had actually given me the mosin that I was supposed to be picked up a couple days later. I noticed that I had the wrong mosin at home but it didn't put me in shock.

So, when I picked up the 2nd mosin the manager was freaking out because the rifle he was giving me did not match the DROS papers. I just played dumb like, "oh wow really?"

He apologized and I just made sure it was my 1943 tula

B5 down here is pretty good, I had to get s**ty with corp over primers - but a good store.

I can only speak for Big 5 Murrieta but last (and only) time I did a ppt there it was miserable. To make matters worse two months later the manager who treated me like a criminal during the transfer called and said he found an error on my form and If didn't come in that day to fix it I would have to deal with the ATF. Luckily a little google foo led me to the number of Ted the director of operations for Big 5 who was more than willing to fax me the forms to correct along with a 25.00 gift certificate.

I was hoping to be doing business with Big 5 this weekend but it just didn't pan out. *sigh*

I bought my first two guns from big 5 and have purchased a few knives there as well. They're not outstanding price wise and I have heard them give out some not-so-great information but they have always been polite and let me fondle whatever strikes my fancy when I go in.
