A friends dad from high school used one (a RAW) to self-check out 12 years ago. I heard it wasn't pretty, but all guns are just a tool in the hands of someone looking to do something extraordinary.....good or bad is in the eye of the beholder. And his choice to use the AK made sure the job would be done right, we've concluded.

It sucked, but everyone is at peace with it today and nobody (that matters) has ever vilified the rifle.

You got my example in your opening... so I'd just expand it; a lot of people fighting communists used them.

On the other side; Kalashnikov made it (the AK) to fight the Nazis... not us. DB pols took it from there.

The Northern Alliance in Afghanistan maybe? The Kurds fighting extremists in Syria & Iraq?

Surprised nobody mentioned the Romanian in the Bowler Hat

The Hungarian uprising of 1956 featured the(probably) first individual to use the AK-47. A young man named Jozsef Tibor Fejes somehow got ahold of one and used it to kill some kind of Hungarian police officer or security agent. He was quite popular in the media during the uprising.
He was tried and executed after the uprising ended.

There were thousands of russian troops that were present, but they are mostly anonymous.

I remember reading a book about Navy SEALs operating in the Mekong Delta during the Vietnam War. The author wrote they carried at least one AK with captured ammo with them to confuse the enemy because of the sound and apparently a different color tracer.

Many small uprisings behind the former Iron Curtain saw rebels using AKs.

Depending on how you feel about it, the Syrian rebels fighting th Asad regime could be considered "good guys" (at least the moderate secular ones) and they use AKs.

The Afghan and Iraqi national police/military that are actually doing their jobs use AKs

Also if you think of "good guy" Vs. "Bad Guy" geopolitically, like NATO vs. enemy flavor of the month, then there are a number of NATO countries that still field AK pattern rifles as they main small arm.

It's heavily depends on your definition of good guy but the Rhodesians used AK's when FAL s were in short supply

During the battle of fallujah rumor has it US forces were at times picking up AKs for use as they are more tolerant of sand.

That's not the main reason they were picking them up. The 7.62x39 round is more capable of punching through barriers.
