    plastic or metal ammo box?

I was curious...what would be better for storage and transport for ammo?

    Plastic boxes like this:

Or metal milsurp boxes like this:

I was wondering because I have a bunch of the plastic kind and I'm considering replacing them with the milsurp metal ones.

Milsurp all the way. They cheap at the gun shows and are built pretty tough.

I use the metal cans too. When I buy bulk ammo, it always comes in the metal cans and I've never had a single problem with them.

You never mentioned what ammo or how much, or how far you need to carry it.

For general storage, so long as it isn't covered in water or see extreme temperatres for several decades on end, it doesn't matter so much.

The military ammo can is the cheapest and most effective usually, by design.

Handguns and small rifles: ziplock bags full of reloads, about 40# in a sturdy canvas tool bag with all the other crap.

I have a plastic box that holds 4 boxes of 12 ga shells nicely.

For .50BMG I use a MTM 12 gauge 100 rd plastic box, the inserts hold 50 rds.

I have both and much prefer the metal milsurp. The plastic is okay for lighter stuff, but for heavy loads the metal is much more dependable.

before I got a range bag I used the plastic ones to take my gear to the range
I prefer the metal ones for storage though

Well if you get cheap plastic ones, yes, they'll possibly break under enough weight. If you get an actual resin case, then you have the better box..lighter and as secure as metal probably.

THe plastic ones Cabela's gives with bulk ammo seem pretty solid and have carried plenty of weight for me..but I doubt they could take a good drop without a major chip or crack.

I have metal MIL Surplus boxes, however I use smaller canvas ammo bags to carry ammo to the range/matches. Bought them at Supply Sargent in Burbank.
