Six rounds of 00 Buck in a Remington 870 against the wall next to my bed, and 20 to 30 back-up shells in the top drawer of my nightstand. I also keep my Sig P220 Carry in my nightstand with two 8-round mags of .45. My wife has 7 rounds of .38 special +P in her S&W 686+ in her nightstand, and another 7 rounds in a speed loader. We also have 5 rounds of .38 special in a little S&W 637, along with another 5 rounds in a speed loader, on a bookshelf near the front door. That's for me or my wife to use as needed, if we answer the door and find a visitor with ill intentions.

A chest rig is OK I guess but I can hand a deployment bag to the wife or son and they have whatever they need for that weapon. I like to keep stuff modular.
Don't know nothing about 10 round mags. Don't believe I've ever even seen one. I live in a free state. LOL

My Hi-Power is kept with 13 Federal Hydra-Shok hollowpoints in it, I always have some extra ammo around but I only have the one magazine for that weapon, so it's not really relevant.

My 500a Persuader has 7 2 3/4" 00 buckshot loaded in it. On occasion it gets bumped to 3" shells.

          My Model 30 has 5 2 3/4" 00 buckshot loaded in it.

My R92 has 12 .45 colt loaded in it.

My 91/30 stays unloaded. Neighbors would be displeased with a .30 cal hole in their bedroom wall.

I always keep enough on hand to load my weapons up at least twice but usually have a lot of 7.62x54r around. But, as I said, that is not a HD gun. I don't see much reason to hold huge amounts of ammo about for two reasons: 1.) In a home defense situation I won't be likely to have enough of a time gap to load my weapons, which are mostly tube-fed. And 2.) Exactly how many people are invading your house?! If you have to have at least 100 around for each gun it's time to move, buddy!

So I was driving home from the range and I noticed that the scent of warm steel, burnt gunpowder and lukewarm coffee combined and smelled oddly of... Peanut butter?! Man, the Hoppe's is going to my head.

For .223, probably like 100 rounds?

and for handgun, 9mm I'm thinking probably also 100 rounds.

I'm just talking about the smallest amount of ammo to keep on hand for emergencies, not an ammo stockpile for the range or the end of the world or anything like that

How many rounds/loaded mags do you guys keep?
Well it all depends on your definition of "emergency." For a single small event, you probably have enough. For something like a Katrina or worse, I'd want to have at least 1000 rounds of everything. And if funds are limited, I would spend my money on ammo for the rifle first.

lol for a home invasion one or two mags for pistol/rifle would be more than enough, and a fully loaded shotgun would suffice as well. I don't expect to need all 100 rounds, I'd just rather be over prepared than under prepared

I was looking for a thread like this... Basically how much HD ammo do guys own; and how much on ready for nightstand?

For pistol, several boxes for a total of 500 as well.
^ ^ I'm guessing this is preparation for an invasion, riots, or Katrina, etc (SHTF situation).

I keep my 226 with 10 shots in the gun. 2 Mags loaded with 10 each = 30. I'm not saying anyone would need all 30, normally a mag of 10 in the gun should be enough to deter most home invasions. You'll probably only need more ammo, if there's actually a long gunfight, results of which would be unknown....

Now, as for the ammo.... I have a mix of 9mm in 147 Winchester Ranger and 124+P Gold dots. Some mags are loaded with both (mixed). Not sure if that's a good thing to do though, but I feel both are "great" rounds, and have their own benefits...

My revolver 6 plus two reloaders, wife's 6 plus two reloaders, shotgun 6. If that doesn't stop what goes bump in the time I'll declare a Broken Arrow and hunker down.
I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.

Two mags for 45, no other guns for HD in my house.

I guess it depends a lot on the nature of the "emergency", no?

                            "Smallest amount?":
                            • For a typical break-in robbery/burglary ... just about any full-sized handgun, shotgun or rifle carries enough on-board to meet most such incidents.
                            • For a home invasion robbery involving 2-3 invaders, I think a minimum of 30 rounds is called for with a handgun ... regardless of how many magazines that means. 20 for rifle and 10 for shotgun, IMHO.
                            • If we're talking local civil unrest lasting up to 3 days, (i.e. standing on the porch to dissuade/defend, etc.) ... I think you'll want a minimum of 200 rounds of something ... which might be divided among pistol, rifle and/or shotgun.

Errr ... quite a bit more than the minimums I recommended.
