I have a 4-16x40 Center Point on a 223 Handi Rifle. It's clear on all power settings from 5 Yard to infinity. This combo is proof that both inexpensive rifles & scopes aren't all junk.

+1 on Redfield for inexpensive quality.

From my experience, the main problem with cheap glass is that it disintegrates under recoil. As long as you have mild recoil, you can live with hazy distorted edges (and sometimes center), canted crosshairs and alike.

I know I shall get flamed here.

I have had very good results with BSA.

I own both the Platinum series and the Contender. Both are very good, and very reasonably priced. I have the Platinum 8-32x55 mounted on my .30-06. I have the Contender (4-16 x 40) mounted on one of my tricked out 1022. I am very happy with both of them

I also purchase the MidwayUSA house brand stuff. Usually, this is the Simmons. I now just made the leap up to Millet. I just acquired the Millet designated marksman optic for a custom 1022 build I am doing. So far ... this thing looks pretty darned good.

My next level up will be something along the Weaver line of scopes. For under $400, you can get a lot of optics for the money with Weaver. I have many successful competition, (bench rest & 3-gun), who highly recommend Weaver.

By the way ... most folks do not realize this DO NO SKIMP ON THE MOUNTING! The mounting hardware, (rings and rails), will truly make a big difference in how well your rig will shoot!

I have been known to spend more on my mounts than on the optics itself. Just a few years ago ... I mounted some EA European mounts on one of my rifles ... I am very happy with these mounts. These things set me back 650 Euros. I have yet to try those German Suhler Claw Mounts. The Suhler mount is an ancient yet very good design. In my opinion ... the Suhler claw mount has never been exceeded to this day!

The problem with the Suhler claw mount is that it will cost you as much to properly mount the bases on these things as the mount and rings themselves!

that may be, but a lot of expensive rifles have iron sights on them. I think I could shoot more accurately with a 100 dollar scope than I could with nice iron sights at 100 yards plus. Certainly then, the expensive gun w/ iron sights isn't useless. So I think a cheap scope has its place. Besides, I'm new at this. If the cheap scope goes to heck, I will throw it in the glove box of the truck, and can use it as binoculars in the truck. I can use it to read a brand on a cow, or see if a sprinkler in the orchard is plugged up, or keep an eye on someone or something in the distance. So far I think it's between baih 777 scope suggestion and I'm also tempted to spend the extra money and go Altahicks route. Seems the super sniper is really raved about in the fixed 10 power. They make the same thing, or made to believe anyway, at same price in a fixed 12 and 16 power. I'm tempted to go to a higher power than 10 though. military uses 10, but people are a much bigger target than a squirrel. I'm confused on whether to think about getting the 12 power or the 16. I'm not sure how close up targets would be blurry w/ the 12 or 16 power. What do you guys think about the 10, 12, 16 power for what distances????

and for anyone that thinks a $200 scope can not be a Great varmint scope then check out these pics. these are all shot with my BSA Platinum ive had since 2007 on a $300 stevens mdl 200 that has shot sub moa with handloads with this scope since the day i bought it. these shots are from 100-400 yds

well I thank everyone for there recommendation or experiences shared. Seems most everyone kept the scopes w/in the range I asked. Although its a lil more money, I think I'm leaning towards the swfa ss. I'm contemplating the fixed 10 or 12 power. Seems everyone in these videos and online reviews thinks the 10 power is great. I think I might rule the 16 power out, being its the same price as the 10 and 12, which leads me to believe its the same glass quality and the 16 wont be as clear as the 10. Also those videos Altahick talked about are good.

Apparently sold out. They have similar models for around $79. I also like the BSA reflex red dot sites at $29.
