You did the best you could at the time with what you had. Good enough. Particularly for this state.
These were snatch & grabbers. They were not going to argue with you.

Not doubting your story, but I do find it interesting that these type of stories come from people with less than 20 or 30 posts.

I think this is a case where you are wise not to call the PD. 90% of the time, you would be OK. The DA and the PD would think of it as an act of self defense. Nothing else to do.
The other 10% is where you get the short-end. Some activist gets involved or some liberal DA wants to make an example of you. You end up on some BS charges that may eventually get dismissed or you might end up pleading to a lesser offense because you cannot afford a good lawyer. You were right and you are still covicted.
I am not surprised the losers ran off. I think most self defense uses of a gun result in no shots fired and lots of people not filing a police report. Criminals are mostly cowards. Even if they got a weapon, they not skilled at using it. They know the chances are good that that your gun works and you can hit your target. Even if they think they can out-shoot you, they know that shots fired brings lots of misery on them.
          Glad it ended well.

I agree. It would have worked out MUCH better for you if they kidnapped your wife and did god knows what.

Nice analysis Exiled. While a for realz gun would have been better, what should he have done otherwise? Hide in his car and let his wife handle it? Pee his panties? Point out that this was a rape free zone?

I have to agree. If it worked for this experience, count it as a victory. But it could be "major fail" down the road.

Be better prepared? Grab a weapon that could actually do something? Keep a real gun in his truck? Make loud noises such as banging pots and pans together?

Don't get me wrong I'm 100% for self preservation and loved ones, but I was taught that if you're pulling a gun out, you're prepared to use it. Those dudes call your bluff and you, your wife, her money, your truck ....??? Could have been lost

Not to mention this. Don't get in the situation in the first place.

Laying on the horn would have done the job as well I am sure.

Thanks all. I feel I did the right thing. The losers didn't even stop until I was fully out of the truck and took a couple steps forward with the pistol in view. I didn't even point it at them.

In the situation we were in, what else was I supposed to do? I took the chance that they were sackless cowards and would think it was a real gun and book it and they did exactly that.

If they call my 'bluff' and want to get into a fire fight right there, sure I'll lose that one and maybe my wife gets hit too but what was the alternative? Sit in my truck and watch them handle her? F that.

It was a spilt second decision. It turned out how you wanted. therefore in that particular situation you did the right thing.... Period. I just wouldn't do it again is all. Like I said I am glad to hear you made them rethink whatever it was they had planned.

So I was supposed to break the law and have a real gun in my truck loaded and ready to go?

Even if I had one of my real guns with me, it would most likely be locked in my truck bed and unloaded. I would have had time to get it out and load it up in that time period? It happened fast. It went from suspicious loiterers to possibly real serious crime real quickly from the time she walked in til the time she walked out. CCW would have been ideal if they actually had balls and a firearm.
