It's cause they got rid of the marines doing security. I remember doing quals with the M9, one guy loaded the bullets backwards into the magazine, one guy loaded a magazine with bullets alternating forward and backwards, the guy on the left and right shot the crap out of my target, teamwork baby, and an Ensign took 2 min to unload a mag on during rapid fire. And we ran out of ammo so some people didn't get qualed that day.

We had this one jarhead radio operator who had a runaway with the 240G and let go while it was still shooting and shot up the fantail of the ship.

Now if only the Navy would do the same thing. Our rifle quals are at 25 yards with a 1/4 sized target to simulate shooting at 100 yards. As a result, all of our rifles are zeroed for 25 yards. It's pretty retarded.

Not with an M-16 anyway. Typical engagement distances for small hostile surface contacts when using the M-2 would be at around 1000 to 2000 yards, and even further with the 25mm.

Also, not everyone in the Navy is on board a ship either. I haven't been on one in over 4 years now, and my last deployment was spent entirely on land. A large percentage of Navy are now serving IA duty in Iraq and Afgahnistan to augment the Army and Marine Corps, so there is a clear benefit to be gained by improving the rifle qualifications program to include more shooting at distance.
