Live as far from the dope trade as you can. Most of these young professionals are too naive or stupid to realize that they can get their throats cut anytime of the day or night by these animals they have chosen to live next to. Trust me most of these savages would not think twice to shoot you for an ipad. Walnut Creek, Moraga or Lafayette is WAY better. Trust me, I have lived there in Oakland and Berkeley and the place is just a dump. A dangerous dump.

Clayton is great and a decent home there starts in the $400,000 range. Rents in the 2k a month range. Almost no crime there. Literally.....look it up.

Try zachary's pizza. If you have a dog, go to point isabel off leash dog park. Eat at Juan's Place and Picante. Drink Peet's coffee, preferably after a refreshing morning walk at Sibley volcanic park. Take BARTeverywhere possible, traffic and parking suck. Barney's restaurant, I like the portobella burger but you have to ask them to add the burger or it comes veggie. Avoid Richmond... seriously. Discover hot tubs and if you really want a time machine ticket to 1969 then go up north a ways and visit Harbin hot springs. Go spend a morning running the dog at Stinson beach in marin county... beautiful. While you are up north of town, stop and take a stroll through the majestic giant sequoias at Muir Woods.

Pt. Isabel is basically Richmond. All the shiny, happy residents prey on the Subaru and Volvo drivers who are foolish enough to leave their cars parked there with their Ipads inside. Nuff said. You will be lucky if you come away with your life. Chicago native here as well. Zacharys' is not Pizza. Yuppie food at its' best. There is no real Chicago Pizza in this area. If you like New York style, Roccos in Walnut Creek is very close. In terms of BART, basically it is a confined space for muggers to prey on Tourists. There is a reason there is a holding cell in each and every BART station. Why would you expose yourself to that risk? We pick up assault victims from BART stations on a very regular basis.

Why Berkeley or Oakland? Close to work? Besides the high crime, the area is over populated and traffic is horrible. Unless you can afford the nice neighborhoods, (and there are nice ones) proceed with caution.

Between the two Berkeley without hesitation. Having lived near both all my life until 1999 I avoided even driving into Oakland.

If there is no other choice look at Piedmont (Oakland Hills) pricey by 10 times safer then Oakland.

Piedmont (hometown of the late Robert McNamara) is considerably nicer than either Oakland or Berkeley.

Our family moved to Piedmont in 1952, it is the only city in America completely surrounded by another city which in this case is Oakland.

True. There are MANY cities -- San Fernando, Burbank, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, etc., etc., etc. that are totally surrounded by the City of Los Angeles.
