    Some Wont Carry past 6 months

    Before I throw out these numbers, I'm going to throw out a disclaimer: None of this is meant to offend, disrespect, or raise the trolls. It is merely a speculation of numbers. The information I gathered is quoted via link, but I really have no idea how accurate it is. I have only used a search engine, calculator, and several shoulder shrugs.

    According to 2013 census, http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/06000.html there are 38,332,521 people in California. I'm thinking there are more, as people aren't quite truthful for a variety of reasons. Lets Estimate 40 million just to have a higher than speculated number. Plus, it being 2014, I'm sure we have several new residents, unless more than I accounted for said "Eff this, I'm out!" and moved to a free state.

    21.3% of California residents are gun owners according to this site have guns. Not sure if they would ever know how many 80%s were done, so not sure where to go with this number. I also don't know if (because it is a liberal website) they are manipulating the numbers to speculate one gun per person, so if one person has 12 guns, they are fudgeing it to state that 12 people have guns. I trust liberals like I trust the neighborhood pitbull. http://usliberals.about.com/od/Elect...Population.htm But for the sake of moving on, lets say their numbers are correct, which means 8,520,000 have guns.

    How many are forum followers, news followers, gun range inhabiters? How many take courses, have thousands of rounds of ammo, know the difference between a XXX and a YYY? We are a community and I am guilty of sometimes talking to others as though they are part of this community and because they are at the range, they know what rented gun they are holding at their bachelor party. We are growing, yes, but the question I had was: How many of us will carry? Lets say a very generous 75% get super excited about the possibility of carrying and sign up(again assuming all goes well and we are approved)That is still a hefty 6,390,000. Pretty good. I like it. But these are not daily carriers. Maybe at first, but guns are heavy. They dig in to body parts. They are sometimes hard to match up with clothing(Yes you CAN wear a full size 1911 under a tanktop, but again, i am generalizing). Don't get me wrong, it would be a great thing to be able to sell a laptop on craiggies list and strap up in case its some ploy to rob you and hurt you in the process. It is a wonderful option to have, this whole defending yourself concept.

    I'm going to say that half of these numbers are going to carry religiously for 6 months,(down to around 3million) then slowly trickle down to carrying in rough city's, craiggies list meetups, or special occasions where you think "man, I should gear up", or even discontinue carrying and not bother to renew their license. Broken down into percentages, my guess is:

    Sheepdogs that will carry every day even after 6 months: 8% (240,000)

    Those who carry when the hours are late or craigslistin it up(lets say 15 days out of the month) 12% (360,000)

    Those who vehicle carry only 30% (900,000)

    The wild card 50% that carrys 2-3 days out of the month(still quite generous). 1,500,000

    What is the state so worried about? We just want the OPTION to protect ourselves. Because...Some wont carry past 6 months. Lets keep this conversation civil, I'm curious of what numbers you think will daily carry, 50%, 25%, 10% and not at all. Ideally we would all carry 100%, but this is not an ideal world, as we can see daily.

    When I can get a permit I will carry everywhere I can legally carry, everyday.

      I have no intention of carrying on a daily basis. There's just no need. I live in a safe city, in a safe neighborhood. Plus, I work from home and I just don't get out that much. So why bother?

      The permit is for when I travel away from home, am forced (by my wife) to go to a shopping mall, am going hiking, am going to the gun range, etc. In other words, I freely admit and fully expect to be one of those people who only carries when something unusual is going on that causes me to "gear up."

      I know other people intend to be more religious about it than that, and that's fine. I think I'm more the norm, though.

      I've been living for more than 50 years on this planet without the legal ability to arm myself on a daily basis. Nothing bad has happened yet. Odds are, nothing bad will ever happen to me.

      No, pushing for the permits is for all those people who don't get to live as peaceful of a life as me. Also, I have kids. Who knows what their future might hold? Forcing the states to allow them a legal ability to carry is something that might be critically important to them. I hope not. But I still want to know the insurance policy is out there.

        I ride a motorcycle every day I doubt I would be able to draw a concealed firearm from under my riding gear. (Though I could probably pocket carry a sub-compact in my daily wear jacket in one of the waterproof front pockets.)
        90% of my travel is to work and back to home with no stops in between aside from weekly gas fill up. I work graveyard so there isn't much to do on my nights off.
        I would like a CCW for transport relief and for carrying either pocket carry in my riding jacket or in a tank-bag while on road trips.
        I do not feel the need to CCW everywhere I go, every day.

          Lets see, what was that old bumper sticker?

          "Three days a week, I carry my Smith & Wesson...you decide which three."

          That's the mantra the dirtbags will know.

          It doesn't matter if 90% of the people carry, or 10% do. If some dirtbag walks into a bank with a gun to rob it, he can't turn his back on anybody. If some dirtbag decides to attempt to use a gun to kill as many people as possible in a theater or shopping mall, he can't turn his back on anybody. If teachers and administrators are allowed to carry, anybody who goes to a school to commit murder will be taken out before he can empty his first magazine.

          Basically, any dirtbag who uses a gun to commit a crime, will have to deal with the possibility that anywhere from 1 in 10 to 10 in 10 will have a way to stop them. The more we are able to stop violent, armed criminals immediately, the less crime will occur.

          That is not to say if you choose to put yourself at risk (wrong place, wrong time), that crime won't occur, it is to say that crime will be reduced where any law abiding citizen is allowed to carry a gun.

            I work freeway construction, 95% night work in bad areas of L.A. If I know I will not be running a jackhammer(which is rare given my position in the company), I plan to carry at least 90% of the time, should this ruling hold up.

            Actually, I plan to try to get my CCW regardless of the outcome of Peruta, based upon my work situation. I spend quite a bit of time in shady neighborhoods late at night, often alone. The only thing that has kept me from trying thus far is seeking the approval of the company owner, which I recently found out carries himself. I live in Riverside county which I have come to understand is one of the easier counties to obtain CCW under current policy. That being said, I will be submitting an application in the near future.

              Personally I find it to be a relative concept: sometimes carry isn't an option, or doesn't need to be. Will I carry in the "doesn't need to be" zones? Yes, because areas you deem safe aren't necessarily so. In fact most mass killings are in "safe" areas.

              I also end up in some of the "unsafe" areas. I've been in those places all of my life, really. Only recently moved to somewhere where going on a lonely walk late at night was an option. That said, I'm comfortable in those areas. A lot of "thugs", "skinhead" and biker types get a bad rap. Will I carry in those areas? Hell, yeah! Because for every thousand people who'll do right by you there's that one that will stick a knife in your ribs (or at least try).

              But, I'm some way away from my carry permit. I won't carry unless I have enough training to feel comfortable with my specific weapon platform. Which, I do not have. So I will stick with my knives, attend training sessions when I can and practice, practice, practice!

              Because the world is a nasty place full of good people.
              So I was driving home from the range and I noticed that the scent of warm steel, burnt gunpowder and lukewarm coffee combined and smelled oddly of... Peanut butter?! Man, the Hoppe's is going to my head.

                I guess I will probably be in the 8% then.

                I was in a BART car when 2 hitmen took the car and its occupants all hostage, beat the crap out of a dope user who was probably not paying his dope bills, then afterwards quickly exited and got away. The place was swarming with BART LEO's afterwards, but so what? Cops can only clean up the mess, they can't prevent anything.

                That could happen any day anywhere.

                I did not enjoy being a hostage. It is a feeling of imminent danger and hopelessness. And then you wonder, how did I get in this situation? Oh yah Beavis, now I remember -- I was recruited here out of grad school to work in a high paying corporate job. Never thought it would be like NYC though. I had specifically turned NYC down.

                24/7/365 will be my CCW plan.

                Live and learn. IF you live.

                P/S -- I'm glad you documented the 21.3%. Every time I mention that it starts a big food fight with the far right.

                BTW, 300 million new applicants is going to overwhelm the country sheriffs. Better get your application in now. I am dropping mine off this morning. Filled it out online and printed it on Friday after work. Tried dropping it off on Saturday but the deputy said please come back on Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. when the sergeant who handles that is back.

                  Very-very interesting thread... OP is very well researched and very provocative... moreover, it is EXACTLY TRUE...!

                  Op... it is a strange, very-very strange phenomena this LTC and a mega-load of lame excuses why these guys don't carry, and never re-new...!!! I never would'a believe it myself if I didn't hear all the excuses and see it time and time again. I tell them; you have ANY idea how fortunate you are to live in Mendocino County and have this privilege just handed to you like free candy... a surreal and very strange phenomena... to say the least...!

                  Very brief history;
                  I live in Mendocino County, CA - We are 'Shall Issue'.
                  I'm a LTC holder since 2003
                  Have seven (7) guns on my LTC
                  Gun is on my person; 24/7/365 - .S&W 340PD .357 mag / Ankle
                  When I run 5 miles a day for exercise 5 or 6 days a week... and YES, I do carry when I run / Fanny pack
                  When I do yard work? Yes.
                  Take the trash to the curb? Yes.

                  When I first obtained my LTC, I worked at Diamond Jim's Sporting Goods and had many-many conversation with gun owners. I have a Type 01 FFL License and I am still involved in firearm transactions.

                  How many times I have a conversation with people, or someone I've known for yearrrrrrrrrrs. And the subject of LTC/CCW comes up.

                  Have your CCW? - Ohhh naaa... used to, but I never renewed it.
                  Why? - Ohhhhh too much trouble, and besides... I hardly ever carried my gun anyway sooooo...
                  Or... this;
                  Have your LTC? - Ya... sure, uhhhhh but... I never carry.
                  Why? - Well, my wife... she doesn't like it. But you know, I carry if I need to.
                  Or this;
                  Have your CCW? - Oh ya... I have an LTC.
                  You carry every day? - No, sometimes I do... just depends... when will I ever need it anyway... besides, it's too big.

                  Now... I can go on and on and on and on... but I won't.

                  Gentlemen, see... here's the deal.
                  You have NO DOUBT heard it before... LTC is like a spare tire, or a fire extinguisher... you pray to God you never need to use either, but thank God it was RIGHT there at hand if you ever NEED IT...!

                  I carry - strap on my gun like I strap on my watch. I take my gun, like I take my cell phone... I grab my gun like I grab the keys to my truck. I always have my wallet on me, my comb, little pocket knife... every day, every day no matter what.

                  And that is how you ought to carry your gun... 24/7/365 - Day in, day out... every day... every day you carry like you wear your watch, carry your cell phone... YES I'M SERIOUS...!!!

                  Now... you will probably have a better chance at winning the Powerball Lottery than you will ever need to pull your gun and have to use it - deadly force to stop a threat of imminent peril.

                  The point is this... if you need it, you need to be able to reach for it, without thinking... and IT'S THERE...!

                  And please... please don't do any of that 'my wife won't let me carry when we are together' - Here is my post, in another thread, a few days ago http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...1#post13526471

                    Times when CCW is not possible:

                    - when you go into a Federal or California government office building (they have metal detectors now);

                    - at the Governor's Mansion;

                    - when you go to court;

                    - when you go to a police or sheriff's station;

                    - in a bar;

                    - while consuming alcoholic beverages;

                    - while taking meds or drugs;

                    - on commercial airlines;

                    - etc.

                    Not sure if I left out any. Feel free to add to the list.

                      Op... it is a strange, very-very strange phenomena this LTC and a mega-load of lame excuses why these guys don't carry, and never re-new...!!! I never would'a believe it myself if I didn't hear all the excuses and see it time and time again. I tell them; you have ANY idea how fortunate you are to live in Mendocino County and have this privilege just handed to you like free candy... a surreal and very strange phenomena... to say the least...!

                      Very brief history;

                      Or... this;
                      Have your LTC? - Ya... sure, uhhhhh but... I never carry.
                      Why? - Well, my wife... she doesn't like it. But you know, I carry if I need to.
                      Or this;
                      Have your CCW?

                      Good man.

The question may very well be a rhetorical question... however, it is something that leaves people like me and various other members here wondering... what... is... that...???

                        I wish you and your loved ones well. I hope you get your LTC.

                          Exactly.

                            Having spent a considerable amount of time in states I can carry in:

                            I started carrying everyplace I could all the time.

                            Over time, I carried the minimal gun with the least amount of "fuss".

                            Then I carried occasionally "night, bad neighborhood, etc"

                            Then I was caught in a situation in which I almost needed to draw my Glock. After that, I decided that convenience be damned, you can't predict when and where stuff happens.

                            If you valued your life and those of your friends/family, then be willing to sacrifice some discomfort/convenience to be armed.

                            I look forward to carrying in CA.
