For me it's a minimum of 10, since it's a slow road for the pistols right now (the rifles have a bunch) i buy whenever i can, but yeah, it's 10 for me, and that's all around, rifles and pistols.

My 2 cents
Range- 2 per pistol or rifle if you only shoot at the range then you have one primary and one back up. If both by some chance break down oh well you are only at the range.
Home defense- No limit really. Most rifles and pistols have a minimum of six
Load out you have to carry- Mostly based on the weapon and shape of the shooter. I am sure some of the former and current armed forces members can carry alot as they are in shape enough for it and use to it. I would not carry more than 3 on my person and one in the weapon for both pistol and rifle (for the sake of the post lets assume they are standard capacity).
My reason for this is...I am just a guy. I am not a LEO or a solider. If I find my self in a situation where I am on the go and need a variety or battle rifle and a full size pistol my best option is probably evasion. If I spot trouble avoid it again because I am not highly trained combat veteran. My goal should be survival of my family, friends, and I. Being mobile can only help me carrying 40 lbs of ammo will slow me down. Obviously if an engagement can not be avoided that is what the ammo, mags, and hardware is for. I also think if you find yourself in a situation when 4 rifles mags (lets say 120 rds of 5.56) and 4 pistol mags (lets say 68 rds of 9mm) are not enough then you are in something really bad and more ammo may not help.
Last I will add my choice if things go really bad would be a small light weight pistol caliber carbine (prefer 9mm) paired with a pistol of the same caliber and preferably with interchangeable magazines. Light, affordable, lethal enough, ammo is plenty full, and enough range to defend yourself when an engagement can not be avoided.Last edited by Jimmy Deuce; 03-03-2014, 2:07 PM."No fate no fate but the one we make"

Depends. When I was competing in 3 gun I had over 20 mags for my AR and my 1911. I like to have at least 5 mags for each firearm and when mag restrictions started looming I began purchasing any full capacity mags I thought were a good deal and I could afford. Not sure what the numbers are now.Rogue American, Media Mercenary.

Just one per beltfed is enough. Isn't it? OK, I also have little ten round belts for letting others shoot them. Thank God for 10 round belts otherwise, when I let someone shoot, they keep shooting until the belt is done.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

I don't like reloading magazines at the range, so I have a rough rule ofJust curious as to how many mags anyone has per handgun or rifle? My general rule of thumb is minimum 6. I have a Leo background so I would carry 4 on my belt and one in firearm. Spare in my pocket. And 4 more in my war bag. Id like to know if anyone out there does the same. I'm no longer LEO but I've kept to my principles. Thanks
thumb of at least 10 magazines per firearm...and usually a lot more.
In 10/22 mags, for example, about 35 to 40.
I preload all the magazines a day or two before going to the range,
and have enough capacity to shoot for hours without having to
reload once.

Thank you, CSACANNONEER. I just had a hilarious image of you at the range pulling dozens of 10 round belts out of military ammo cans while other shooters at the range stare with that "What the ****?" look on their faces.

Thank your neighbor and fellow gun owners for passing Prop 63. For that gun control is a winning legislative agenda.

All are great responses above. While there is no right or wrong answer, I just wanted to hear different opinions from people with different backgrounds and firearm types. I can say I don't feel like the only one with 6+ mags per firearm anymore. I try and buy when I find a good deal, especially those 10 round magpul 556 mags. I enjoy reloading mags at the range because while I load up again, I get to see everyone's form and technique around me and talk to others as well.Comment
