I was at a friends wedding on Maui a few years ago.
They have the Best sporting clays range there,
The name of it is Papaka Sporting clays. also have hunts there. Pigs and birds as I recall.
The range is in small volcano like enclosures.
We rented shotguns there so we didnt deal with the Issues.

Ok...Amber and I will be off to Hawaii for our honeymoon in a few months.

Would like to bring my .45 with me. I understand it will need to be locked up in my checked baggage.

Does anyone know Hawaii's hand gun laws? I just like to have some heat with me when I travel....you know...SHTF when away from home,etc.etc.

Yeah Hawaii pretty much sucks like Kalifornia when it comes to gun laws.

I do not plan of carrying around....just want it at the condo and have it "just in case".

Wouldn't be too worried about it...I've stayed at condo's in Hawaii many times and no problems....only thing to really worry about are the people that work for the condo company. They can be shady, I just wouldn't bring it because when you go to the beach or pool those people have keys and can go in your room and steal it along with your other stuff. Like I said shady people. Hide your valuables and gun in the air vents don't rent the safe if there is one..

Stan, if you stay on Kihei side, get some poke from the Safeway counter. They usually have about 7-10 types. Really good & Ahi tuna, just grill at the condo picnic area, some veggies, rice & eat on the lanai. POG juice with Malibu rum will taste good only in Hawaii. Have fun.

Not trying to scare you, but on another forum someone recently posted that their gun was stolen out of their checked baggage and then a couple of other people chimed in with similar stories. One suggestion was made to find out the exact address you'll be going to and shipping it there overnight to yourself.

Ammo in one suitcase, gun in a locked case in another suitcase. Ammo in original box with plastic / foam protector etc. If they want to check your gun, just hand the guy the key to the case. Do not try to touch your gun!!! Likely they will not check it, it MUST be unloaded!!! Adding a trigger lock or having the slide off and in another suitcase is good.
At check-in, I say gently, slowly and clearly: " I have a un-loaded firearm to declare". They will give you a tag to sign and put in your luggage.
Upon landing, hustle to the baggage counter and if your luggage does not come out on time, notify airline right away.
A .45 and 100 rounds or so of ammo are heavy! Maybe a Airlight .38 and 50 rounds of +P HP ? Default: $8 for pepper spray when you get there.

You have to register your handgun with the local PD when you arrive, once done, you can return at will with the same handgun and not need to re-register it. No mags that accept more than 10 rds, they can be pinned, blocked, stuffed, whatever, but not more than 10 in there.

Travelling is easy: pack in a locked case, declare it at check-in, pick up on the other side. Ammo can be packed in the same bag, separate from the gun/case. Ammo must be in "manufacturer's" packaging and limit is 11 lbs. However, you do not need to declare ammo.

Best to ship the gun and ammo to yourself to avoid not only potential hassle (depends alot on which airport you fly out of) as well as avoiding the weight limit and baggage limits from the airlines right now.

+1 for Papaka Sporting clays. Super great folks and a nice place to shoot. It's towards the end of Kihei Road on the southern part of the island, about 20 minutes past Wailea/Makena. Very hidden and private. It's been a couple years, but the place was very well run and extremely friendly. It's worth the phone call.

This is the way I tried it my first trip. American Airlines had a cow, they wanted the ammo in a separate bag, so if either bag was stolen, the thief would not have both gun and ammo. I had only one suitcase, I had to use my briefcase as the second checked bag. TSA interpretation, airline rules change? YMMV

Best to call ahead and find out what exactly your particular airline wants.

I was there in April and shot a match and registered my gun.
Overall it was pretty easy except taking the extra time to drive from Lahaina to the PD in Wailuku.
If you haven't been there before, a GPS is your friend.
Actually, all you have to do is go through the door on the right and go up to the window that's on your immediate right. Tell them your a visitor and you want to register a handgun. They want to look it over and get the make, model and serial numbers. Then they hand you a paper to take across the walk way to get finger printed and a picture. (You can't take the gun with you so you'll have to lock it up in your car). Or if you're lucky enough to have someone with you, you can leave it with them but they'll have to stay in that lobby.
Once it's registered you're good to go. Should you ever visit again you won't have to register *that* gun again.
I decided to bring my own ammo with me. It's way cheaper to bring your own and I gave away what I had left. 200 rounds of 9mm is about 5 pounds and Hawaiian Airlines maximum is 7 pounds per checked bag but you'll have to check with your airline on what their rules are.

And let me just say this about the Valley Isles Sports Shooters club; This is a great bunch of guys to shoot with. They made me feel welcomed and just like I was one of the guys. I really felt like I was at home and shooting with my buddies... Hmm... Well, now that I think of it.... I *was* shooting with my buddies... Mahalo guys...

Actually, Hawaii gun laws are not that bad. CA is 100X worse. Pistols are, yes, but long guns are not.
Born and raised in HI, I had permits to buy since I was 18. No big deal! The main this is, don't be a cocky A-hole from the mainland....they don't like that! Like was posted before, they will make you feel welcome! DON'T leave anything valuable in your car where ever you go. It will disappear. And the people at the airport in HI, if they are having cows, there's not much you can do, but be as nice as possible. Separate your gun and ammo in 2 bags. I moved to San Diego 2 years ago, and have transported about half of my collection this way, with no problems. <knock on wood> Unfortunately, I had to leave some of my prizes at my folks house....my BM-59 and CAR-15 oh well......Enjoy your trip!

Yes it's true but you can block them to make them legal.

Depending on where you're staying, some hotels won't let you keep a gun or ammunition there. So if you shipped ammo and it was properly labeled and they didn't allow it there you might find out they refused delivery.

Its much easier to travel with your own ammo.

Be descrete and polite...

Have a great time - and for sure do not leave anything in the car at all that you care about - not even the trunk is safe.
