Shotgun is better for home defense, so if that is one of the things you are considering using your first firearm for, then get a shotgun.

....but get a Remington 870 or Winchester 1300 based shotgun, not a Mossberg.

I don't think they could install a ban by august 09. Congress is too slow for that.
Just FYI, if you buy high cap mags while you're away for college, you won't be able to bring them back to California when you return - if you return.

You say its for HD, but you also said you will be able to buy your first gun soon. So are you telling us your 17 and live on your own (hence the HD)? How can you afford guns and rent at 17??

-NVM read your post about going to college...If I were you I'd save my money and get a head start on paying off college loans.

All that aside if you plan on going shooting with it, get a rifle or you will regret it. Shotguns get boring real fast especially in the desert, mountains, or at the range.

Yea im 17 right now, but my room is completely on the other side of the house.Fortunately we have an alarm system...And as far as college goes, my parents have that taken care of

EDIT: I was talking to my dad, he's just gonna gift me a handgun. It'll be cheaper to shoot, good for HD, and I already know how to use them pretty well.thanks for all the input though
