who else is using the surefire ear pro?

I bought a pair of the ep7 (uses the replaceable comply tip foam). My opinion is they are not enough when other people are shooting but are great for out on your own.

I was shooting my 16" 5.56 AR prone under a covered bay with no issue but when my buddies wife touched off some rounds from her AR 5.56 16" i needed to put on additional muffs. Also just last week was shooting my sks with my brother at sac valley shooting his garand and even in the open 15' away it was not enough nrr. It doesnt bother me at all when Im the one shooting.

What are your thoughts on these?

They are great to double up with.

My experience with the surefire ep4 is about the same as yours. They don't offer enough protection on their own, decent plugs to use underneath earmuffs. While I realise the ep4's I've used have a slightly lower NRR than the ep7's, the ep4's didn't seem to perform at their rating compared to other plugs/muffs of a similar rating, you might have the same problem with the ep7's.

I figure they will be great for a class. When instructor is talking remove cheapie plain muffs or failed battery electronic muffs and be able to hear while still retaining some ear pro.

Im probably just going to use them doubled up with some electronic muffs. Currently eyeing the msa sordins from triad tactical.

I use my EP4s alone and have nothing but positive things to say about them, if I'm out by myself I go open plugs, if someone else is shooting nearby I close them.

I use mine with the plugs closed 100% of the time. They've been nothing but great for me. Also, make sure you have the correct size. Undersized ones might let too much sound through.

+1 and I always wear foam insert plugs also. The combination of the foam and the sleekness of the Peltor Shotgunners work well and cuts down the bulk. I will sometimes take off my cans on a hot day when sweat is a issue but only when shooting trap though since it's not very loud.

Hearing is important. That and working in clubs/bars plus my own appreciation for loud quality music already dose/done enough damage.

Any In-Ear plug is not enough for constant High Concussion noise like gunfire. They stop the sound from going in your ear canal, but the area AROUND your ear still transmits a lot of the energy. Always double up at the range.

I have a set of EP3's that I always wear doubled with my Pro-Ears Gold. I turn the pro-ears up so that I can hear conversation normal, but all gunfire is GONE. Best set-up for USPSA. And if you are getting hot and want to take off the muffs while off the line you wont get blasted.

I've had a pair for about 2 years now and while the foam makes it much easier to put in, it still takes too long for me to get them right so I just use muffs. I also bought a box of less aggressive foam plugs to use when I need to double up.

Just recently, I got a pair of custom molded plugs and they are fantastic. Easy to put in, super comfortable and I don't find I want to double up at the range.

fbgear.com in SoCal made them for me.

I use EP6, awesome even when firing .308 or 10mm. I don't double up. I might if I were to use something bigger, even 300 winmag, I'd probably put on something more.

I'm currently using EP3's. I've used Surefires for a long time. I don't wear earmuff style earpro because I can't get good cheek weld at all with them on.

imho they are terribly ineffective when i am at the range. i use them solely for when my girlfriend starts to snore when we are in bed.

the surefires are great in clubs, live music and such...

The SPL is too great for me to target practice with them....

For hunting where you need to hear what is around you, they are a good option versus not wearing hearing protection...

The foam ear plugs I have are either a 31 or 33 DB reduction

The surefires are around a 19 DB reduction with the stopper closed...
