    Shooting Games?

First off I want to say when I say game I don't mean screwing around and being unsafe. Safety is paramount.

    Onward...

I am taking a small group of friends out shooting and I'm looking for some fun ideas for shooting games. I went with some people 3 months ago and we shot at paper targets all day. It was fun, we had tons of random zombie paper targets, storm troopers, aliens etc. But by the end of the day I realized two things. 1. Paper targets in an outdoor area aren't very reactive and therefore not as thrilling. 2. There are only so many times we can have a shooting "tournament" before we realize who is just gonna win every time.

So what am I asking for? I need advice and ideas for cheap activities that a group of 10-14 guys can do in the desert while maintaining a high level of safety. Something more than just shooting at jugs of water and expired fruit. Already we are planning to setup a small area for run and gun practice, and a "test" area where we're gonna build some mock walls out of 2x4 and drywall to test in person ballistics of our different caliber guns. Other than that we'll have a rifle range (150 - 200yds) and a handgun range (20 - 25 feet) setup. We want to use are ammo intelligently as well... so dumping mags isn't really "fun" to us. I would love any advise you guys could give me too.

TL;DR? I need ideas for shooting activities beyond shooting at jugs of water and expired fruit.

obviously Steel is always pleasant but can be on the pricy side even to make your own. Plus you must now be aware of ricochets.

I really like the cheapy clay pigeon holders for gun stuff. Clays are cheap and you can easily arrange multiple targets at different distances and heights etc. Bio degradable clays are good to go for BLM land.

A cheap helium tank from Costco, balloons, string and a 2x4 to tie them to can provide some moving target fun if there is a bit of wind and you stretch out the distances you shoot at to make it more challenging.

Yeah like bigred said some steel targets like dualing trees or the flipper targets. What some of my friends and i do is we set a few of the steel ground bouncing target in a line and basically race them to a set finish with a bottle of binary compound after the finish line. It makes for a great challenge..

            Can popping.

Toss an empty 12oz soda can on the ground 10-15 feet out.

            Take turns shooting at it.

Most every hit makes it jump and move.

Eventually it gets at an angle or range that is near impossible to hit. It can reallty test your skill.

Best done with .22s but, works with anything.

Take cans out when you leave please.

            or;

10 pound bag of potatos and a can of orange spray paint makes some great "exploding" targets.

            Use your imagination.

Why not come and shoot a real competition? USPSA/IDPA/Steel Challenge are timed and scored so you can see how well you do against everyone else, plus it's fun

Didn't think about potatoes definitely gonna give that a try.

re: steel targets; the dueling trees would be awesome... if we could afford it. I'm thinking about building something out of old discarded hardrives that might beable to do the same thing.

re: binary compound; if only we didn't live in California.

Keep em coming. Keep in mind... cheap and easy to clean up. We want to make sure we clean up everything we bring in...

Different colored or numbered targets, call them out to the shooter at random.

Or my favorite, setup a number of targets downrange (1-5 at a time) at different positions, and some as no-kill targets while the shooter has their back turned. Turn and assess the threat

                            I have a few games.

                            Paper targets:
Darts. Simple highest score of 7 shots.
Poker. All 52 cards are on the target, 7 shots, best poker hand wins. Or if you are at an indoor range, you can play each other on one sheet, taking turns shooting and that player claiming that card for their hand.

                            Games:
Dueling banjoes (2+ players). Just pick something to shoot at (a can, piece of broken clay, clump of dirt, etc) and take turns shooting at it. Whoever hits it first gets a point and gets to choose what you will be shooting at next.

                            Clays:
2+ players with shotguns. Person A calls pull and gets first shot. If they hit it, they get 1 point. If they miss it, person B gets a chance to shoot it before the clay hits the ground. If person B hits it, he gets one point. If both person A and B miss it, the thrower gets a point. Next round person B gets call pull and get first shot and person A gets to play cleanup.
                            Kevin

I found all my plates after rail lines being replaced. The track layers threw them off to the sides. Some scattered here and there..sometimes a pile. I have picked up about a dozen of them. 9" by 14" or so..3/4" thick

Go find some rail lines and look around.

They look like the one below. I used to just use bailing wire to hang them, but it does get weak and break too often for me. I welded on chain..works very well now.
