I cant remember the stuff, but one time I used something in a squeezable plastic bottle and the stuff was pink and it was goopy, a little thicker than dishsoap. Cant remember the name. It helped to remove light rust. I let it set all day just to make sure. If anyone has used this I need some now.

Naval jelly will absolutely remove rust.... As well as any bluing it touches... So it generally should not be used on firearms.

As I said above any steel wool will leave scratches... They may not be readily noticeable to the naked eye, but they are there...

Steel on steel is not a good idea.

I guess it all depends on the definition of rust or surface rust.
I've used Flitz, generic gun oil, Eezox and CorrosionX Gun Oil with emery / crocus cloth, 0000 steel wool, bronze wool and microfiber clothes.
I find CorrosionX to be the very best for light to medium oxidation.
Apply liberally...let it stand and then, depending on the severity, rub out gently with the appropriate cloth/wool.

0000 steel wool and hoppes # 9 will do the trick. I had this problem with my 870. Didnt take long at all to get the rust off.

Dang so many guys quick to suggest 0000 steel wool or brillow pads. try a normal shop towel before you move to a rougher application OP.

Those will work but will micro scratch your finish. No need to add extra wear if its not to that extent. Again look into a can of Eezox. Works WONDERS!

polishing leaves microscratches too. That's the point. Rub 0000 in the direction of the barrel polishing, works a treat.

I've stripped parts of bluing via naval jelly and also with muriatic acid. They both work. I agree, not a good chemical unless you are trying to get to bare steel.

I dunno, works pretty well as a pre-treatment for any sprayed on finish.

of course. the scratches would give the coating something to adhere to.

I think the point is he doesn't think we should be microscratching the bluing.

Which I disagree with, but cleaning rust fomr a finished gun without maring the finish is completely different than prepwork before coating a gun, especially if that coating is any sort of spray coating where film thicknesses will be huge and adhesion the primary concern.
