    How To Remove Rust?

It wasn't until after I recently posted some photos to calguns that I noticed my 1911 has some light rust on it. The rust appears to be on the parkerized finishes (this piece has both parkerized and polished finishes).

What do you suggest for removing the rust without disturbing the finish? I've got Breakfree and Hoppe's around here. I could find some steel wool. How about one of those green scrubby things for cleaning in the kitchen?

Chime in guys. I need your help.

    Thanks.

I've had good results with CorrosionX and emery cloth for light oxidation. The "scrubbie thing" can be effective but not sure if you'd do better with the "gray" or the "green".

Only use a rag or you'll scratch up the finish.

Tried Break-Free (just for the hell of it). Tried Hoppe's.

Bought some Flitz and some cotton rags an hour ago . . . .

Gun oil on a small pad of 0000 steel wool. Works like a charm..

Steel wool will leave scratches, even 0000 so don't use it.. Use the edge of a regular US nickle and a drop of oil...

The nickle is softer than any steel so it will not leave scratches, but hard enough to remove any corrosion. It will also not leave behind any transferred metal...

I've always used 0000 copper wool and Kroil Oil. It gets rid of the rust without marring the original finish.

And in all fairness, just because JMB did it doesn't mean anything. He'd have won WWII with a soup can, a fork, and a couple rocks. Seriously, even McGuyver and Steven Hawking get together every now and then and are like "How the **** did he do that?..."

The Brownell's video (see above) says that 0000 steel wool and oil will not harm even a hot blue factory finish.

^^^ That is what I have used and a gunsmith friend reccomended to me. Oil and 0000 Steel Wool
Worked just fine and did not hurt the rifle or pistol.

If you're in a pinch and it's light rust, using WD-40 works when you let it soak in.
