I have posted a few items in the market place and I'll get an IM from someone saying they'll take it and then I hear nothing. They don't respond to any requests. It really ticks me off!

Why say you want it and then flake on it?

I don't mind if people say, "I'll take it pending some questions" that's understandable but plain "I'LL TAKE IT" is no excuse.

There should be a rule that you can only claim an item for purchase in a public post. Any PM's that come in saying "I'll take it" should be answered with "While I'm happy to discuss specifics of a deal via PM, in order to claim this item you must be the first to post publicly in the for-sale thread that you'll take it". That way there is no dispute about who claimed it first, it's publicly visible for all to see. The seller should then confirm by quoting the post saying "I'll take it" and answering "sold to posterX pending funds". That prevents the buyer from fudging his post later trying to say "whoa dude, I never said I'd FER SURE take it!" LOL dude, you did too say you'd take it, now follow through with the transaction or get negative feedback, poser.

I'm able to be online sporadically when I'm on duty. I've had a couple of instances where I say I'll take it, then have a communication with the seller about it, confirming that I'm first in line.
Then I get back on line the next day and there's a message from the seller;
You didn't message me in a day so I sold it to someone local.

So, it cuts both ways, fellas.

An I'll take it should be honored by BOTH parties. Negative feedback might be the only way to keep track.

Last example;
I recently sold a Saiga 762 through the forums here. It was amazing how many Calgunners were messaging me while it was already marked SPF to the first I'll Take It; Saying "I'll pay you TODAY." or "I'm willing to pay more." and "forget that guy, I'll drive out and buy it."
Jumping someone elses deal is low in my opinion. So, I'm sure it happens... most likely happened to the deals I thought were solid.

For the most part, my experience in the calguns market place has been really great. I've had a few folks say they wanted some ammo and then change their mind. They don't realize or care that I have to lay out the cash to bring it in and that I'm definitely not getting rich doing it. Overall, I have really enjoyed meeting and talking with calgunners through the marketplace board. I buy and respond/act in the same way as I would like to be treated. The only problem with the iTrader is you can get flame wars going, one maybe deserved negative begets a negative response etc. There has to be some sort of impartial "judge" to really get to the truth behind the he said/she said stuff, but that is alot of mod work.

Agreed. If you say "I'll take it" you need to honor your statement. As far as response to a PM to purchase, 24 hours is enough time IMO. If you think you may not be able to get back in the 24 hours then you need to say so. I ran into this problem on another site where I hadn't heard back in 2.5 days so I sold it to someone else. The first guy was ticked off and said he was out of town and I should have known that and waited because he agreed to buy on a Friday

In this case I got a PM stating "I'll take it". I returned the PM with a request to post in the thread that you wanted it and then to PM me for the payment deals.

I got squat...no response...and this person was still online...so...they saw the PM and just ignored it. I have since sent additional PM's without a response.

I always say "I am interested" first then after talking with seller I'll post "I'll take it".
This way we are on the same page.

Yes, I think it is known as the "California Flake", it is more common than you think. It is when someone says that they will do something for you, but then immediately lose interest, and will then deliberately avoid contact with you, so they don't have to deal with it. I have only been out in CA four years and have really noticed how bad this phenomemon is in this region.

That's the way to go, if a buyer sends me a PM that he'll take it I advice him to post in the original thread that he'll take it. PMs are for personal details.

Exactomundo!!! It is a very CA thing. It's a direct by-product of the Politically Correct attitude that prevails here.

My solution is simple... those buyers and sellers who flake on a deal are just candidates for the ignore function.

When I get a PM saying "I'll take it", I place the item SPF to (screen name) in my thread. I hate PMs that say "Hey my brother-in-law saw your ad and he said he will take it". I was silly enough to fall for that once. Never again. If I have an item for sale, I would usually give out my number in PM and set something up that way. I figure if I don't hear from that person within a reasonable amount of time then they weren't serious. All in all, I've been lucky in the marketplace. All my items (except for one I had to ship) have sold in 2 days or less.
