Ruger mini 14 harmonis dampener make a AW

Ok I'm still looking to buy the mini 14 as I have quite a few mags from 1975-79.

Asked earlier if I could use old mags or what, was told GTG, as long as it's featureless, and RR is. ( you can check older post if you like )

Went down to purchase this little gem, and of course all out. Ok I'll just look around some more till I find it.

OK up to speed now : while looking for said rifle I see this video on youtube for target model mini 14. WOW that is a nice shootin rifle there,, SO I want it now instead of the regular RR.

And now ( a new quagmire ) need to know if this barrel harmonic dampener will make this a AW or what. ( can I still use my old standard mags ? )

It's not a flash hider or muzzle brake, but will it be considered as such as it would look kinda odd to LEO's/Ranges.

Just tryin to stay clean and out of any trouble because I live in Ca.

Can you Guy's & Gal's help out on this. Thanks...

a harmonic dampener is not on the list for AW's, but the gun in the vid is a thumbhole stock so that would be a issue for detachable mags ... change the stock to a standard mini 14 stock and use the harmonic dampener and any mags you legally own ....

The harmonic damper is not an evil characteristic by itself.
Be aware the Target model ONLY chambers 223.
Do NOT use 5.56x45 in it.

Ruger makes a California version with a Houge stock. It doesn't look as cool but otherwise it's the same. Here's a linky: http://ruger.com/products/mini14TargetRifle/models.html

Ok the .223 only could be a deal beaker, as their is few if any low cost vendors of that round, and would have to stick the one manufacture ammo or re-tune.

But holy C**P it still intrigues me to no end.

              Penal Code 12276.1. (Now 30515)
              (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276 (30515), "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
              (1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
              (A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
              (B) A thumbhole stock.
              (C) A folding or telescoping stock.
              (D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
              (E) A flash suppressor.
              (F) A forward pistol grip.

So According to Penal Code 12276.1. (a)
A Featureless Rifle can not have any of the following:
              Pistol grip.
              Thumbhole stock.
              Folding or telescoping stock.
              Grenade launcher or flare launcher.
              Flash suppressor.
              Forward pistol grip.

Note: Threaded Barrels and Bayonet Lugs are not on the list and are legal.

So no a dampener is not a listed feature. I didn't spend a lot of time looking at the video to get a good shot of the device but there s a chance that if it did function as a flash suppressor or was advertised as functioning as one that it could be ruled as one. But I didn't look into that at all.

Get one of the new regular minis, they are really great guns and shoot much better than the old ones. One of the really fun guns to shoot.

is int 223 and 556 splitting hairs, i doubt few shooters could tell the difference.

^ There are dimensional and pressure differences between the rounds which can become an issue in certain firearms.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

                        1100 bucks for a Mini!

The target model appears to be just that - intended for target shooting. If you want an all-purpose rifle, you're probably better off with a non-target model.
