I believe the MP40 is an open bolt gun. If the sear doesn't catch it's going to dump the whole magazine. Rental guns see a lot of use, it was either worn or in need of a cleaning. There's a good reason open bolts are not used very often today.

And yes, if a gun goes full auto, keep your head down and hang onto the thing. It will run out pretty quick but you need to keep on target.

You are correct, it is open bolt as is the Thompson, Sten, M3, a bunch of others. I wonder if the MP40 was shooting reloads which were underpowered. It sounds like it was short recoiling.

I fired one at Discount firearms and it functioned very well. (For a 70 year old war relic)

One thing Battlefield Vegas has over all the other MG rental places...

They are a 07-FFL/02-SOT and rent new MGs.
90% of their inventory are post-'86 MGs.

Whereas, the other places all have pre-'86 MGs that have been used & abused.

I would guarantee you the round count on that thing is well north of 100,000 rounds, and probably closer to 1,000,000.

I'd think it was a bit pedestrian and maybe beneath most gun owners to partake in such things. Go bumpfire your AK in the desert and save yourself $100.
Yeah, because bump firing an AK in the desert is the same as firing an actual, full auto MP40.
