Sorry guys not ALL 870s had these problems. Some sure. Just as every brand Benelli, Mosseberg, Beretta all have forums out there entitled "My gun sucks and this is why I'm selling it"

I have the 870 Tactical Express. In fact I have two of them. Both have over 1000 rounds each and I even used one on clays a while back.

When you hear these "Fail to extract" and "jams" it's mostly around cheap bird shot rounds with non brass casings. Mine doesn't like Winchester Cheapo bird shot. I've fired nearly 900 rounds of 00 and another 200 rounds of slugs without a single issue. All have been brass casings though.

I have a safe with two AR15s, three 9mms, and a Remington Versamax Tactical, but beside my bed is my 870 loaded with 00.

You have to remember Remington makes thousand of these guns so there are going to be a few that are not great. Just a Mosseberg (check out the JM Pro failure thread) and Benelli all have a few with issues.

Other guns perform the same function reliably at less cost. Maverick 88 being one.

hey OP.. I've got 2 870 express and one Mossy 500. the Mossy is a cheaper feeling gun, and the one 870 didn't like bulk bird shot, til I switched cheap brands(win/rem) and ran 200 or so rounds thru it...now it doesn't care what I load...go figure

                    I wasn't aware newer 870s have issues.

I have two I bought used a few years ago. Both function very well. The 870 is among the all-time classic shotguns.

One of mine is an 870 Express. I have two barrels for it, longer one for clays (tons of fun), and a shorter one in case you need to clear zombies out of your closet.

I also have an old, beater-looking police wingmaster. Maybe it fell out of the patrol car a couple of times, or was used to break down a few doors. But, despite its rough cosmetics, it's a rock solid unit. It's the equivalent of a beater car that just goes and goes.

Find a used 870 Express Home Defense, model. Mines 11-12 years old and has never FTF or FTE.

It is a shorter barrel than the Tacticool model and if you wanted/needed the door breach attachment it will require a barrel change over to one with choke threads.

If you desire to hunt with it, you'd need a longer barrel and you'd have to take off the magazine tube extender and change out the spring to conform to hunting laws.

I have an 870 super mag that works well. While it does not "like" to shoot certain birdshot the most common ones work like Remington, Winchester, Federal, Rio etc. It has fed slugs and buck no problem no matter what kind. Mine needed a breaking in period of around 200-300 rounds before it became reliable.

                            Ditto.

FWIW, never had a jamming issue with my Moss. I've feed it slugs, 3" rounds and everything in between.

no kidding, my dad bought the 870 express combo that comes with the riffled BBL and the action release button gets stuck all the time!

My mossy 500 on the other hand has never had any problems EVER. go with Mossberg.

My 2 cents save your self the money (specially if the shotgun is for fun) and buy a hawk982 or NEF Pardner. Use the rest of the cash for ammo and extras (light, sling, shot saddle, etc). Do some research many Remington parts fit both. Hawk is in the $200 range the Pardner may be a little less(I bought mine on sale brand new for $169)
