    bought a used safe.

    Good morning everyone.

So... I have been on the hunt for my first safe for almost six months now. I told my wife that all I wanted for Christmas was a gun safe. She agreed and the search began.

We had a budget of $1000 give or take a couple hundred. I was spending countles hours on Youtube and Calguns doing research. It seemed that in my price range, all I was going to get was a small safe imported from China. I needed to either A) Save more pennies for the safe I wanted or B) maybe look in to a used safe.

Durring the holidays, we went to Sacramento to be with my family. My sisters house is only 2 miles down the road from the Liberty Safe wherehouse. I wanted to see what they had. It was a mistake of epic proportions on my part. I had just stepped in to the mecca of safes. They had a safe for every budget. And of course I have champagne taste on beer money. But none the less, it was an awesome experience to be able to put my paws on everything. I set my sights on a "Lincoln" safe by Liberty. It was the perfect model, just not the perfecet price. I needed to come up with another 2K if I wanted to take it home. Plus delivery fees from Sacramento to So. Cal were a little pricey.

Meanwhile while enjoying the holidays, I came accross a used liberty safe on Craigslist. It was the Lincoln model just like I wanted, but it was the next size down and not the color I wanted. But the guy selling it only lived 2 miles from me. So he agreed to hang on to it for me until I got home.

I got home and went and viewed the safe. It was built in 2007. It was in great condition. The only drawbacks were color, size and mechanical dial. I really wanted a digital. But none the less, I bought this safe because of its superior specifications vs those made in China. I am real happy with the purchase. I got the safe for $1100.

I quickly filled the safe up. And I was a very happy boy....

Good find. Combo's can be changed, Liberty can refer you to a local locksmith. I was given a quote of about $100 - $150 locally to change mine. In time you may appreciate the dial better, the electronic keypad locks have more internal moving parts that can fail and lock you out.

yes, call a local safe store or qualified locksmith. They can change combo for you or better yet install a new lock. I prefer the electronic lock.

If the seller doesn't have your address, don't worry about the combo change. Unless he was a drug dealer, he's just an honest gun guy like you. Anyway keep the dial lock, they are the industry standard and work fine.

With 40 years in the restaurant business, I have used countless safes with electronic or dial locks. The electronic locks are faster to open, which is convenient if you access the safe often, or need to in an emergency. They also allow you program multiple combinations so each person has his/her own combo. It easy to reprogram a combo if you want to delete someone from accessing the safe. However, keypads start to show wear on the numbers that get punched all of the time. They also crap out and lock you out. Electronic safes will suddenly have the chip die and forget all of the programming. When that happens, a locksmith will charge you hundreds of dollars to open the safe, repair it and then install a new lockset. Dial locks seldom fail.

If you need a manual dial change
                              Do a search on ebay
Something like this is always turning up
