    Question about Raahauges shooting range

I've got here about 4 times as they are closest to my house Tustin area and have a 100 yard rifle range.

We are the one-stop location for the shooting enthusiast in Southern California. This public range has private bays for pistol and rifle, 100-yard bay for rifle and a 30-station sporting clays course. Bring your own guns or rent one from us.

The last couple times the range master has been giving me a hard time about picking up brass. They usually say nothing about picking up your own. However today there was a guy there shooting AR 308 and he and I got to talking. He doesn't reload and offered that I could have his brass. There were 300 new Winchester rounds fired so my mouth watered at the prospect as I need good 308 brass. They got on me about picking up some extra .223 brass so I told him the agreement I had with this guy. He refused to let me pick it up and further told me I was NEVER aloud pick up brass at this range.

I read the document and range rules and it says nothing about this. What gives? Really made a great day crappy with my nephew for this guy to get on us the way he did.

Is this normal? I don't remember ranges being this way in VA.

Go speak to someone at the front office.

This is not a rule there and whoever is telling you, you can't pick up your property or property that is being given to you is incorrect.

I've heard range staff at Angeles tell people that they could only pick up their own brass. Apparently, picking up other people's brass is forbidden there even if the other person says that you can have it. I'm sure the ranges want to maximize the amount of brass they collect, I sometimes salivate when I think about how much Front Sight collects each day.

The Rule is you may only pick up your own brass because you own that brass. Anything else that falls to the ground is the property of Raahauges. Doesn't matter if the other shooter said it was ok, get it? If the shooter doesn't pick up his own brass, he can't give the brass rights away. The brass rights belong to Raahauges. They have paid employees to pick up what's left.

Sorry no I don't "get it". You speak of 'property rights' and a rule that is not listed in the documented range rules that you now sign when entering. I understand why they want to do it ($$). But without it clear to customers it's not a rule and quite frustrating to be scolded like a child when it's not explained, documented, or even discussed when entering the range.

Yeah I hate those type of guys usually at ranges and even some gun shops, they feel like their big & bad and can talk to whoever like their above all other humans.

Going to big bear this week and plan to shoot up there. Hopefully its a good experience. I saw they have a nice range there. Might be a wee bit cold though. heh.

I'll try a few other places out around the OC. Just want a good experience. Thanks.

sounds like the OP is upset more because of the way the RO treated him versus the fact he wasn't allowed to pick up the .308 brass, and, I agree to some extent...obviously the ranges are trying to get "free brass" themselves, but they shouldn't become petty about it

my only exception might be if, the ammo the guy is shooting is the ranges reloads...but even then, he did purchase them

That's pretty much the way it is at every range, public or private. Some ranges will even declare all brass that hits the ground belongs to them, just like some matches are 'lost brass' You just haven't been to that many ranges to know that. The reason is that there are shooters who would vacuum every single piece of brass from the range and try to resell it for a profit. In today's times the brass reclaimed by the range helps offset the cost of running it, therefore lower prices to the shooter. My partners and I looked at a starting a range in the high desert, and the start-up cost along would have been over $200,000 for a 5 acre six berm pistol range. Environmental impact study along was going to be $25,000 -$40,000.

I used to shoot at Richmond Rod and Gun Club.

What gets me: why do they have to be so RUDE? They all get on a power trip.

Now shoot at the Oroville Range, no range master.

I am a member at Raahauge's and shoot there often. Raahauge's does not pay the Range Masters that much so they collect the brass every night and sell it to supplement their income. I have bought brass from them a number of times.
Johnny, and Chris are really great guys that work hard to keep things safe and enjoyable. Sorry for your bad experience but they are just trying to keep food on the table. Hope you understand.

In my experience at Angeles; if the guy giving you their brass is still [right] there it goes easy. Its almost like your part of their group / party.. and if they pick up a couple pieces and hand it to you in front of the RO; nothing is said about you sweeping up the rest of theirs.

                            PS
If your scrounging watch out for the berdan primers. Just did 1300 rounds of 223 and found one mixed in.

Heh yea, I've had good success with .223. Loaded about 1500 rounds so far. Started sizing and depriming a few 308s for the first time and bent the deprimer after 10 due one of those. 35 bucks later I just learned that lesson. lol
