Dammit, I gotta learn how to embed videos properly. Here's just the link, it's James Caan room clearing a suburban home with a long slide 1911. He was trained by a friend of Jeff Copper who instructed at Gunsite (amongst Michael Mann aficionado's it's fun trivia to know that Cooper refused to instruct Caan because of Caan's character being a career criminal in the film)

Gay marriage, guns, a bureaucratic community college system, mandatory 10 day waiting periods, beautifully-ethinically-diverse-and-often-stuck-up-spoiled hot girls, marijuana licenses, San Francisco & Los Angeles, legislation for paparazzi, rioting in celebration (when the Lakers win), rioting for injustice (Rodney King), Celebrities Rights Laws, and non-stop beautiful weather; what not to like about our glorious People's Republic?

This is an interesting video about typical gun safes and how they are easily compromised in seconds.

That video is about Stack-On lock boxes. I wouldn't trust a Stack-On with anything valuable.

I am pretty sure the buddy's dad would have written the combo somewhere with his important papers. Ask mom to look, or go through his special/important area(s) i.e. desk, file cabinet, bank safety deposit box, garage etc.

A bit of a drive from you, but i think he will service your area. He's a straight shooter and will tell you exactly how much over the phone.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. The only place the combination to my safe is written down is on the paperwork that came with the safe. That paperwork (and all important papers) are in the safe. The only exception is that my will and life insurance paperwork are in the attorneys files. My fiance also has the combination memorized. Wouldn't want a burglar finding the combination.
