Lots of folks tagging this thread for information.

I had a buddy at work that went out for Thanks Giving dinner a couple years ago and when he came back some low lifes had broken in and stolen $40K worth of firearms. He was intentionally targeted. The thieves knew he had guns and they watched and waited for an opportune moment...Thanks Giving.

Unfortunately he did not have a safe (only a locking cabinet) and he did not have insurance. He mistakenly thought he was covered under his regular home owners policy. But his policy only covered $2K

He lost everything including some family heirlooms and two very nice and very old Weatherby shotguns.

Please don't delay on this folks and don't assume your are covered under your regular home owners policy. Bust it out and go through the fine print. Also be careful with what your agent tells you. I have incorrectly been told by an agent before that I was covered for something when the reality was that I wasn't. Read the policy.

And also be careful around the holidays. It's prime time for thieves. Pay attention as you leave to the parked cars, people in them and any others hanging around.

Peace...on earth good will towards men.

I am covered through State Farm under a separate policy from my home owners. I had to open a Personal Articles policy to cover my stash. Still looking for better rates though. Most home owners policies only cover up 2K worth of stuff like other posters have said. YMMV.

I am also interested in Historic/Eastern insurance. $135 for $35K is a good deal, but only if they are easy to work with in the event of a claim.

I have tried to check them out to see what kind of rating they have. I have also searched for complaints or comments on other forums. I can't find anything.

Any info on them would be a big service to many members on this forum.

I know for 100% sure AAA covers $1,500 of guns. Want more its pretty pricy over $100 a year for a fre thousand more of coverage. Just another reason to invest on a good safe. Between higher insurance premium and a safe deposit box fee. You could easily ofset the price of a $1,000 safe in less than 5 years

I have home insurance through safeco and they also have no sub limit on firearms. They will cover $250k in personal property and they do have sub limits on cash, gift cards, tools, jewelry, etc..., but not firearms I verified this with agent and by fully reading my contract.
They also cover 10% of my property limit away from home. So, $25k should cover any theft of guns I would ever have in my truck.
They did mention a detailed list of firearms would help in a claim, but they didn't need it on hand, so I have made several lists and keep them at my parents and inlaws.
However, my insurance is a fail safe. I have very heavy duty bolted down safes and a home security system as a primary measure.

Gruber. Good on you for reading your policy and understanding that insurance should be treated like a back up plan for losses. Loss prevention always trumps insurance.

One point you may want to double check is the 10% figure you cited. Normally that restriction only applies to places you are living in temporarily. Hotel rooms or timeshares etc.

Yeah, I thought so as well, but it covers any personal property (besides vehicles) when away from residence. Now everything is first subject to my deductible, but I went over all of this in great detail with my agent.

Keep in mind I have no affiliation with Safeco, but part of the reason I chose them for my home insurance was the no firearm limit. I shopped around a while and it seemed most places had a $5k firearm limit.

Not sure I was clear based on your response. Personal property limit is usually covered 100% anywhere in the world. The 10% limit usually applies only at temporary living spaces like hotel rooms as I mentioned before.

And yes, the deductible usually applies to everything.
