Red Ryder BB gun trigger job

Grandpa got the boys BB guns last year ... can't shoot for crap with them and the kids gave up on them - all because the triggers are so hard (like 10-12 lbs) that their little fingers just cannot do it without yanking the guns all over the place.

Moms out of town this weekend so I set up an indoor "rifle range" for the kids - they got frustrated again due to those dang triggers.

So, I took those suckers apart and gave then a bubba style trigger job! 10 minutes with a file and both guns now have snappy 5 lbs triggers. A real joy to shoot and everyone is happy and having fun.

So far no one has put a BB into the walls so we are good until the big mouths blab to mom.

Now to work on those kids form.

Kind of a ratchet and pawl sort of mechanism - the last tooth closest to the trigger needs to be cleaned up and polished for better trigger action. I reshaped it and made the break really sharp.

I did not take out the piston to polish it. Actually, I don't know how.

My buddy did the same trigger job on my Red Ryder as well. Such a difference!

Thanks for sharing OP. Bought my kids a Red Ryder and am having the same issues. I'll have to give the trigger job a try.

Ha. That's so funny I got my 4 yr old daughter one of those and did the same thing. I couldn't figure out why she only liked to shoot 5-6 times then I asked. It's to hard. And I watched her have to use 2 fingers. Took it home and gutted it. A little work and had her up an running. She's now happy to go shooting and only needs one finger now. Made it all the more worth it to have her out on the range with me.

We all wear eye protection so got that covered. Can't say the same for the door, door trim or various bits of wall within arms length of the target. I should have used a bigger piece of plywood ...

At least we got a good dent in the laundry and dish piles as well as got the carpets shampooed and tiles cleaned and sealed. Not all just sitting around drinking and shooting.

Worst parts was getting busted for the McDonalds run ... damned kids meal toys ratted me out.


According to SWMBO we are not allowed to shoot in the house anymore.

More like bend a piece of sheet metal like an AK build. Billet BB guns are for snobs.
