What's the ultimate home defense weapon?

I was having a discussion with my buddy, we got into it pretty good as to what the ULTIMATE home defense weapon is. He said its a shotgun and everyone knows that, I stopped him before he got to into it and told him that a high caliber hand gun with extended mag is better.

It's bettter for rounding corners and to manipulate were my main arguments.

I'm pretty sure i wont this argument, thoughts?

This horse as been beaten more than a Dickensian orphan but I'll bite:

There is no "ultimate" weapon for anything as no single weapon will fit every unique situation. There are so many variables in question (Layout of the home, neighborhood, distance to neighbors, response time for LE etc etc) that you can't say one gun is categorically better than another at HD.

Bottom line: Use what best fits your unique Home Defense Plan, which should be dictated by the layout of your home/neighborhood, HD objective(s), and your level of expertise.

The best weapon for home defense is the one you have trained with the most. This is the one that you can manipulate and clear malfunctions on in the dark, when you are scared spitless.

The best weapon you can get is training. Lots and lots of training.

As to your high caliber handgun argument, I can tell you that hitting a person with 9 00 buck rounds at one time is more powerful than anything you can do with a handgun, no matter how fast you can pull the trigger. If you are using slugs (which i do not recommend), you would turn the target into exactly that. A slug.

The shotgun is a devastating weapon system if you learn how to use it properly. If I could only have one weapon to bet my life on, it would be my shotgun.

Question is too vague and everybody's needs/abilities are different.

My 70-year-old mother who lives on 5 acres in the country is going to have different needs then my 18-year-old niece who lives downtown in an apartment which will in turn be different than mine (180-lb male in a house in the 'burbs).

It's like asking which car is the best; are you commuting in traffic, speeding down the autobahn, or running the Paris-Dakar rally?

As for your buddy, tell him to hand a 12 gauge pump loaded up with 00-buck to a 80-lb teen and tell them to empty it. Most (though not all) will hand it back after the first round and say "screw you".

Bottom line is the best home defense gun is the one the person shooting it can use accurately and reliably while putting as many rounds down range as possible.

The Second Amendment is a doomsday provision, one designed for those exceptionally rare circumstances where all other rights have failed - where the government refuses to stand for reelection and silences those who protest; where courts have lost the courage to oppose, or can find no one to enforce their decrees. However improbable these contingencies may seem today, facing them unprepared is a mistake a free people get to make only once.

I'm talking about a 2 bedroom house, tight quarters. Your not going to wanna go running around the house looking for a bad guy with a huge shotgun. Hand gun would be key in this situation. I think you would agree RuskieShooter?

I would say 12 ga. less penetration and more coverage

Any firearm that you proficient to use under stress. What the use a shotgun or any caliber firearm if you can't aim perfectly.

it depends on what you are defending your home from.

I currently have a XD9 in night stand duty, but now that I completed my Remington 1100, I am adding that to the HD system. See video of running my 10 shot beast for the first time.

Why would you want to "Go running around your house looking for a bad guy" at all?

In (almost) any home defense situation I would not be clearing the house. I would be behind a locked door with a well-framed welcome for anyone that came busting through it uninvited. Shotgun works pretty good for that, and not a huge one either. "Huge" shotguns are for things that fly. Small (18" barrel) are for things that go bump in the night.

Having said that, I have a handgun in the nightstand every night, but that's to get me to the shotgun in the safe 12' away.

Short answer to your question, the best one is the one that you can hit your target with.
