Do you keep one in the chamber in your HG and shotgun? Ready to rock?

If you are proficient with it, and it's a HD length shotgun and not a bird gun, navigating a home with a shotgun isn't really all that difficult. There is a reason why SWAT teams generally use long guns when entering a home.

As for what is best, it's up to you and your situation. If you anticipate having to use one arm to gather up your kids and get them to safety, a handgun might be better for your needs. As for myself, I don't have any kids, so I'd rather face an intruder with my Mossberg than any of my handguns.

I personally keep them loaded, but not chambered.

If anybody gets in my house without the dog in my avatar hearing them it wouldn't make any difference having one chambered because they're either a Ninja or a ghost. This dog hears moths flying around in our bedroom and the cat tapping on the screen door at the other end of the house.

The best home defence WEAPON ever is the claymore! Put one at every door and window and no one will get in

                ^^^

                This.

HD is about defense, not search and destroy. It's not worth the legal, physical, and emotional consequences if all you stand to lose is property.

On the flipside, maybe you have a mult-story home with children on the groun floor and mommy and daddy upstairs, or vise versa. In this case, yes you might have to move though the home in order to ensure the safety of your entire family. In this case, the has changed and so the firearm may also change with it. The point is, there's no a one size fits all plan, nor is their a one size fits all gun.

In the end it's about analyzing your environment and making the best decision for your circumstances.

When I read this, I thought Scottish broadsward claymores, not "This side towards enemy" claymores. I think both would be effective in the right situation.

My opinion is a pump shotgun is better if you have it accessible, but a handgun is more likely to be easily accessible at your bedside if you responsibly store your firearms in a safe, as you have plenty of options for a small bedside pistol safe than you do for any kind of longgun.

So my vote is with a pistol - whichever you've practiced the most with.

How about the Deringer option? A one shot drop?

Do you guys leave the gun inside your drawer when you leave? Or do you put that thing away in the safe?

The best weapon you can get is training. Lots and lots of training.

As to your high caliber handgun argument, I can tell you that hitting a person with 9 00 buck rounds at one time is more powerful than anything you can do with a handgun, no matter how fast you can pull the trigger. If you are using slugs (which i do not recommend), you would turn the target into exactly that. A slug.

The shotgun is a devastating weapon system if you learn how to use it properly. If I could only have one weapon to bet my life on, it would be my shotgun.
                        Nailed it! I second this!

Overall best tool would be a carbine with a short barrel, a suppressor, and a 30 round mag. Too bad you can't have one here. Shotgun is a close second. Handguns are for carry. They might be good enough most of the time, but they are incomparably inferior. That said the training trumps the tooling, and everybody I've met that advocated handgun over long gun had the disproportionate training to go with it.

If used properly by the operator, there is no greater ultimate weapon than this......

You almost got it but what you really do is sneak behind him and grab it by the balls and say gotcha now its time to play.
