It wasnt in the carry on bag. It was checked. Am I right?

It was pretty clear to me. They were calling for him over the speaker. I was then able to, logically, conclude it was not his carry on.

The way I read the op was that the barrel was in checked baggage. They called him after passing through security and he was in the bathroom. I doubt OP would leave his bag at the security screening area.

So I'nm on OP's side on that point. As far as what constitues a gun, the ticket agent likely doesn't know and isn't going to take a chance of not following the proper procedures. Not saying they were right, just likely not fully up to speed. Just because you (the OP) tells them it's not a gun, and even if confirmed by TSA and PD they are not going to put their job on the line.

I've never had a problem flying with any of my guns and I've flown into and from LAX, San Diego, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Baltimore among others. I always try to be as accommodating as possible without giving up any rights. I figure the easier I make it for them the easier it will be for me.

My last trip in November I asked the ticket agent if he needed to verify my rifle and pistol were unloaded. He said, "No you're signing it's unloaded and you only need to open it enough to let me slip in the form and then relock it."

If you'd declared it as a 'gun' even if it was only the barrel, filled out the form and locked the bag then all would have been good. I'm guessing though that the large suitcase wasn't hardsided and that might have been the problem the airline had with letting it fly with you.

Glad you got it resolved and good luck in the future.

While I agree that you have the right to your own opinion. You do not have the right to your own facts. The TSA regulations are very clear. No gun parts in carry on. A barrel is NOT just a metal tube, it is part of a gun. Perhpas you would do well to check out the TSA web site.

Your right; I thought since it was a ticketing agent yelling at him it was in a checked bag and the agent called tsa / police since it was not locked up or something.

OP, you're ignorant. The TSA rules require gun parts to be treated like guns, and your trying to use the BATFE definition of a firearm to excuse your failure to declare the gun parts in your checked luggage is where you went wrong. I've flown several dozen times with guns, gun parts, and ammo, and it all goes into a hard sided luggage or a hard sided case, and declared. It's a good thing you weren't on an international flight, it would have really gotten ugly for you.

                tsa rules:
                The term firearm includes:

Any weapon (including a starter gun) which will, or is designed to, or may readily be converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive.
The frame or receiver of any such weapon.
Any firearm muffler or firearm silencer.
                Any destructive device.
                not parts.

Sounds like the responding police officer did you a "solid" and held the barrel until family could pick it up, which he certainly wasn't obligated to do. Instead of publicly thanking him, you have to add in a dig about cops not knowing the law in the last line of your post.

WTF? You had my full support until that point.
