Hey, looks like they updated the .400 Corbon wiki

I remember going to that web page and being disappointed that they only had a paragraph. Whoever updated it on the 4th of July must have been one lonely bastard, but he knew his stuff.

I've always wanted to try this cartridge out. Since I'm into reloading, all I need to do is get the dies and reload for this round inexpensively.

Anybody ever shoot this wildcat cartridge?

it's not really a wildcat. A factory maker loads for it and guns are/were available from at least 1-2 makers in this chambering.

Thanks for the tip re cking out the Wiki page about the .400 Cor-bon. It now has a TON of great info. I remember cking it out a year or so ago and being disappointed to see only a paragraph of info.

By the looks of it, the .400 Corbon is alive and well. Acc to that Wiki page, Corbon offers 7 different rounds in that cartridge and about a half-dozen companies offer after-market barrel conversions in addition to the factory made Les Baer 1911s.

I remember thinking about trying the .400 Corbon on a 1911 several years ago, but was concerned about wasting time, money, and effort on a flash-in-the-pan. But now it looks like the 400 has legs and is here to stay (albeit as a niche round). I'm now thinking it is something I'd like to try next spring after I get into reloading. By what the Wiki page says, it is really a versatile round (e.g., self-defense, IDPA/IPSC-USPSA, hunting, metallic silhouette, etc.). Should be fun!

      Thanks again for the "heads-up."

I've been meaning to get a .400 Corbon barrel for my P220, but other projects keep getting in the way. One of these days it'll happen.

I have edited some of the really bad ones on carcanos and other old milsurps.

As for .400 being dead, I have been seeing that in boards since the late 1990s. I just made my first one last year. I picked up a barrel on Ebay a month before they yanked most of the gun parts. It was $60. $25 for the dies, a freebie spring from the local gunsmith, and I was in business. I put the whole thing together on a RIA 1911, ran it by the gunsmith, and I was off to the range. Great round. Accurate, powerful, easy to reload. With the open sights, I can hit a 1 foot target at 115 yards 9 times out of 10. I like it. I like it a lot. I'll probably take it to Texas or Hawaii the next time I go hunting hogs.

              Sounds like you're really happy w/the .400

What type/size hogs do you plan to take w/it in TX and HI? What grain/type bullets @ ?,??? fps do you plan to use for each?

Any one figure out how to make it work in double stack mags?
I mulled over getting a .400 Corbon barrel for my XD when I first picked it up a few years ago, but got discouraged after hearing reports of the rounds occasionally taking a nose dive in the double stack mags. Now that I reload I'm considering it again and hoping someone has a solution.

Really? That's not good news. Do you have links to sites where they talk about that happening? Does it happen w/particular brands of "former .45s" or particular mags or particular bullets? The devil might be in these details.

Does anyone know if there is a forum dedicated to the .400 Corbon where these things might get hashed out? If not, is anyone w/tech skills interested in starting one?

Does that happen w/the 357 SIG too? If not, I wonder why the difference.

A single-stack .400 would be okay for some things, but not optimal for others. Wilson sells single stack blued/SS .45ACP mags that hold 8 or 10 rnds that should work w/the .400 Cor-bon (http://www.wilsoncombat.com/a_magazines.asp). Since CA has a hicap ban, I guess until some post-incorporation "son-of-Heller" shoots down that law, most of us will have to make do w/10 rnds of .400 Corbon.

I've only heard of this happening with double stacks. XD's, GLOCK's, that sort of thing.
Every XDTalk thread on .400 corbon has a couple of comments by people who've experienced this.
I don't think this occurs with the 357SIG because it's not as extreme of a neck-down; that's just a guess though.

Sorry, I thought that I had subscribed to this one. Evidently not.

Yes, I am very happy with it. The accuracy with this set up is impressive. Hitting a 1 foot target isn't that spectacular, but with the little iron sights, I was happy. I have it loaded with 165 grain JHPs moving at just over 1100 fps. I don't remember if I used gold dots or golden sabres. It was one of the regular brand name premium lines instead of plain old JHPs. And I made my cases out of .45 range brass. It is cheap enough that I don't stress about losing them. I don't even try to pick up all the empties like I do with my other cartridges. I will probably be using this on hogs under 150 pounds at ranges under 30 yards. I wouldn't hesitate to use it on something larger if it was closer to the tree stand. It is a good set up for that kind of hunting. Not a substitute for a rifle for long shots. But much cooler in close.

As a side note, I did get it up to over 1200 fps with the 165s using good load data, but the recoil was significantly greater, and I didn't feel like battering the frame that much. If I need more gun than my standard loads, I brought the wrong toy to the party.
