The CSMR is the National Guard lite. It is a good intro to military service and for a young person and an excellent way to sample military service before signing up for a hitch. For folks who are past the enlistment age or are prior service it is a great way to support our National Guard soldiers and airmen and do something worth-while and meaningful on a weekend a month. You won't drive a Bradley or crew a Blackhawk but what you will do is needed and matters. The CNG can't perform its mission without the augmentation of the CSMR.Nope the Guard is federally chartered - the real CA Militia is "The California State Military Reserve (CSMR) is an all-volunteer State Defense Force"

The CSMR people are very nice and I think you might enjoy it. Not to mention that makes you eligible for C&Rs lol."Men sleep peacefully in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."

Just my 2 cents
I was in the Army for 4 years. I am a Army Airborne Infantryman. I did one year in the California National Guard. I was in the LA riots. I got out after a year. After 4 years in the active the Guard was not for me.
I am a patriot and I love the idea this country is founded on.
But I think the fact you are on this site own firearms, you are probably one some kind of list. I wish that was not true, maybe its not. But things are changing and they are not changing in our favor brother.
I think it comes down to your gut feeling. If you feel its something you want to do, then do it. If you feel its wrong about it, than don't do it.
If you did not serve, you don't have to do it to prove anything. The fact you are a participating member on this site, that means something to me.
Go with your heart, you have no reason to prove anything. I look at this group as my own militia. We raise awareness and money for things we hole important. And we share info and support each other.
I don't know where you live, but if near me, I would go shooting with you and share knowledge. Good luck brother.

Years ago I got up early one morning and was watching the news over a cup of coffee. There was Breaking News over a militia group cell that the LAPD had infiltrated and uncovered Operation Taco Bell. Apparently they were going to go down to the border and spot for illegals. Anyway it turns out one of the people busted was a guy I knew at work. He lost his job and pretty much everything he owned after a protracted legal battle where I believe most of the charges were evenly dropped. If you want to be part of the solution I’d suggest joining the NRA and or CalGuns.sigpic

Hey guys. Just wanted to touch base and see what the view is on these guys. I heard about them here:
Then I found there website here:
And here:
I attended a "meet and greet" and found it to be a very informed and professional crowd. What I'm scared of however is being placed on a government watch list and potentially screwing up any job opportunities in the future. I also don't want this to turn out to be a few psychotic and PTSD crazed outings (imagine an uncontrolled full metal jacket) I also don't particularly want to be labeled as a militant or terrorist. Maybe my fears are irrational.
Have you guys had any experience, BESIDES just a bash session with this group? Thanks in advance."You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

Join a real one. CSMR is supported by the state and a lot of great people are in it. Though if your just looking to shoot there is not too much of that. But you make a big difference in a lot of ways.NRA Member and Pistol Instructor, CGN/CGF supporter and CRPA Member. Time to put your money where your mouth is.
Current goal; become a Appleseed Rifleman.Comment

Personally I don't like to bash any group I don't have any experience with (most especially a very pro-constitution group). I was exactly in the position you were almost a year ago.
I actually debated joining up with the CSMR (regardless of the administration) because I wanted the skills even though I didn't get to shoot. My problem is the commitment (I have 3 little kids and the wife and I are on opposite schedules). There may be a couple of months in a row where I don't get to go out (even if I want to very badly).
I was a bit cautious about the group so I started with a meet and greet. I attended a few FTXs and a year later I have learned a ton of stuff (day/night navigation, medical, mountaineering, hand signals, radio communications, survival skills, etc.). It became a bit more though. You develop a brotherhood with those that strongly support the constitution. From the outside looking in drinking the media hype, you'll think very bad things of any militia (and I agree that there are extreme types our there so if you do hookup with any other militia other than CA Militia...do your homework).
Just to educate some of you, we follow a strict code-of-conduct because our very large organization (last FTX was over 250 present...there are about 800 members). All it takes is one bad apple to make the media demonize the whole of us. We are a purely DEFENSIVE organization. If any of our members start talking crazy actions (offensive) against the government, the leadership WILL report them ourselves to authorities. Look at militia in our own American history, we did not take the first shot. We don't expect to ever.
I'll take credit for the cheesy video. Whenever I get into training, I have two options (do not train and simply take the best footage I can...or get what I can during training...guess which I normally choose?). I wish we had more resources to do more profession videos and stuff...but alas....everyone is a volunteer. No one gets paid for anything....taxpayers don't pay a single penny for our equipment, training, etc. We have great volunteer ex-military, senior members (that have been doing this a while), nurses, EMTs, doctors, survivalists, HAM operators, you name it....
Bottom line, if you can do the CSMR...do it. I applaud you and urge you. If you don't and want to be a more skilled milita man/woman, you can get those skills with the CA Militia.
Oh, and as a hiring manager....your skills come first. Forget militia, you can be interviewed by a liberal and wear a NRA pin and get denied a job.
Lastly, regarding the penal code mentioned above. It was correct that it is up to the DA for interpretation...but they also must consider the full text of the law (of which some parts were left out).....
PENAL CODE

one or more other persons for the purpose of training with,
practicing with, or being instructed in the use of any firearm,

injury or death to persons, with the intent to cause or further a
civil disorder, shall be punished by imprisonment in the county jail
for not more than one year or by a fine of not more than one thousand

Nothing in this subdivision shall make unlawful any act of any
peace officer or a member of the military forces of this state or of
the United States, performed in the lawful course of his or her
official duties.
(2) As used in this section:
(A) "Civil disorder" means any disturbance involving acts of
violence which cause an immediate danger of or results in damage or
injury to the property or person of any other individual.

(C) "Explosive" has the same meaning as in Section 12000 of the
Health and Safety Code.
(D) "Firearm" means any device designed to be used as a weapon, or
which may readily be converted to a weapon, from which is expelled a
projectile by the force of any explosion or other form of
combustion, or the frame or receiver of this weapon.
(E) "Peace officer" means any peace officer or other officer
having the powers of arrest of a peace officer, specified in Chapter
4.5 (commencing with Section 830) of Title 3 of Part 2.

Last but not least, we have already been visited by the FBI. Their writeup of our organization was that we were not a terrorist organization and that we a defensive organization that supported a pro-constitution government. We got good remarks and reviews. If I can get access to that letter (and its public record), I'll post it.
Hope that helps....from the inside looking out.

Everything my brother Adrenaline said is true. I am a Private in the CSM and have been in it since June. We are your neighbors, your friends, your everyday people and we believe in helping the people of the state if the time ever comes and we believe in the constitution. We are not a paramilitary group, infact we are covered by the California Veterans Code 120-130. The CSMR is the organized militia while the CSM is the unorganized (all though don't let that fool you, we are very well trained and organized). In some parts of the state, we work close with law enforcement, mostly up towards Redding and Cottonwood though. We consist of everybody of all races, religions and sex and from all kinds of proffesions as well. My job knows and they think it's cool and they are thankful that there are people willing to volunteer for things like this. We are not a hate group or anti government loons, we are just regular citizens, some who have law enforcement and military backgrounds who are exercizing our constitutional rights. If you want to join us, do it, don't be scared. When all else fails, we are the very last line of defense. Oh and also if you're scared of being on a list, we also have former federal agents who are with us too. I was being trained last weekend by a guy who retired from Homeland Security. My across the street neighbor is a cop too and he has expressed only good things when I told him I was in the CSM. I'm not worried and neither should anybody else because we are the good guys. If you own a gun you're probably on a list already. Before I end this post though, I do have to say, the real sad thing with this thread though, it shows how media that has demonized militias can scare away law abiding citizens of exercising their Constitutional rights.Last edited by Loco45; 11-19-2013, 9:17 AM.Airgun and firearm enthusiast.Comment

CALIFORNIA'S MILITARY AND VETERANS CODE
SECTION 120-130
120. The militia of the State shall consist of the National Guard,
State Military Reserve and the Naval Militia--which constitute the
active militia--and the unorganized militia.
121. The unorganized militia consists of all persons liable to
service in the militia, but not members of the National Guard, the
State Military Reserve, or the Naval Militia.
122. The militia of the State consists of all able-bodied male
citizens and all other able-bodied males who have declared their
intention to become citizens of the United States, who are between
the ages of eighteen and forty-five, and who are residents of the
State, and of such other persons as may upon their own application be
enlisted or commissioned therein pursuant to the provisions of this
division, subject, however, to such exemptions as now exist or may be
hereafter created by the laws of the United States or of this State.
123. Whenever the Governor deems it necessary, he or she may order
an enrollment to be made by officers designated by the Governor, of
all persons liable to service in the militia. The enrollment shall
include any information that the Governor may require. Three copies
thereof shall be made: one copy shall be filed in the office of the
clerk of the county in which the enrollment is made, and two copies
in the office of the Adjutant General.
124. Enrollment shall be made upon such notice and in such manner
as the Governor may direct. Every person required by such notice to
enroll who fails or refuses so to do is guilty of a misdemeanor.
125. The following persons shall be exempt from military service:
(a) Persons exempt from military service by the laws of the United
States.
(b) Regular or duly ordained ministers of religion.
(c) Students preparing for the ministry in recognized theological
or divinity schools.
(d) Pilots and mariners actually employed in sea service by a
citizen of the United States.
The above persons shall not be exempt from enrollment but shall
file verified claims for exemption from military service in such
forms and manner as the Governor may direct.
126. The Governor shall appoint boards in number and personnel as
will best accomplish the enrollment and such boards shall be vested
with the authority and power of passing upon and determining the
claims of exemption filed under section 125. An appeal to the
Governor may be taken from the decision of the boards by the State or
any person interested in the matter and within the time prescribed
in regulations promulgated by the Governor.
127. When the National Guard and Naval Militia are on duty as a
combined force at any time, the commanding officer of the whole force
shall be designated by the Governor. When two or more officers are
on duty in the same place, camp, field, command or organization, the
Governor may assign the command to any one of such officers without
regard to seniority of rank or branch of service.
128. The unorganized militia may be called for active duty in case
of war, rebellion, insurrection, invasion, tumult, riot, breach of
the peace, public calamity or catastrophe, or other emergency, or
imminent danger thereof, or may be called forth for service under the
Constitution and laws of the United States. Whenever it is necessary
to call out any portion of the unorganized militia, the Governor may
call for and accept as many volunteers as are required for such
service, under regulations provided by this division.
129. Every member of the militia who is ordered out, or who
volunteers or is drafted under the provisions of this division and
who does not appear at the time and place designated by the Governor,
or under his authority, within twenty-four hours from such time, and
who does not produce a sworn certificate of physical disability from
a physician in good standing, is a deserter and shall be dealt with
as prescribed in the Articles of War of the United States, or by this
division.
130. (a) Members of the militia of the state shall not be
discriminated against in enlistments, promotions, or commissions on
any basis listed in subdivision (a) of Section 12940 of the
Government Code, as those bases are defined in Sections 12926 and
12926.1 of the Government Code, except as otherwise provided in
Section 12940 of the Government Code.
(b) It is hereby declared to be the policy of the State of
California that there be equality of treatment and opportunity for
all members of the militia of the state without regard to any basis
listed in subdivision (a) of Section 12940 of the Government Code, as
those bases are defined in Sections 12926 and 12926.1 of the
Government Code. This policy shall be put into effect in the militia
by rules and regulations to be issued by the Governor with due regard
to the powers of the federal government that are, or may be,
exercised over all the militia of the state with regard to positions
requiring federal recognition.
United Stated Code (USC)
TITLE 10--ARMED FORCES
Section 311. Militia: composition and classes
(a) The militia of the United States consists
of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are commissioned officers of the National Guard.
