First off, why do you want to join them?

I want to attend events to learn skills that I may need. Ex: shooting, distance shooting, navigation, and more. Also it seems stupid not to be networked nowadays with people. And plain and simple it sounds fun.

Nope the Guard is federally chartered - the real CA Militia is "The California State Military Reserve (CSMR) is an all-volunteer State Defense Force"

My dad was in from 1979-1988 in the 579th engineers battalion, many fond memories. He loved the guard (he was also a Korean Vet) and it was all about serving the state and mostly prepping for natural disasters and such.

Now that the wars are winding down it might just turn back into a real state militia and you won't end up oversees, hopefully.

I got to handle my first M-16 and M60 when I was 10 years old, all through the Guard.

This also. Where else can you get paid to drive a 30 ton tracked IFV or shoot and qualify on a 25mm chain gun? Where else can you be a part of a REAL team with REAL brothers and practice REAL tactics and take an actual REAL oath? Why the US Military, duh. Either active or reserve, you will be a part of something great where you will be a part of a machine that serves your country.

Seems these guys just want to relive glory days or don't want to give an actual commitment except for going out for convenience.
