Man with Gun Arrested @ LAX

Airport police Sgt. Karla Ortiz said the man either took out the gun or a gun carrying case around 9 p.m. Friday. At least one witness who saw the act notified authorities and the bomb squad was called in to search his bag.

Can't tell from the article if the guy was a dumb*** or if he was yet another victim of some "well meaning" moron.

He apparently had checked the firearm, properly, and it was still unloaded when what ever happened, happened.

My guess... he popped the locks on the case to make sure it was still in the case as it had been when he checked it and somebody looked over his shoulder and panicked.

After you fill out the unloaded firearm declaration you are supposed to put it inside firearms case. Duh. Hard to do that without opening case.

And if its a long gun, in its own case how exactly are you going to place it "near" the case.


So the article says the guy either took out the gun or a gun case so conceivably somebody freaked out simply at the sight of the gun case. Either that or maybe it was in a nice sturdy case like a pelican case and he popped it open to put the orange card inside.

Either way it sounds to me like this guy is getting screwed because somebody panicked at the sight of an evil gun.

Read the story. He was ARRIVING and was charged with brandishing - that means the gun, not a case



The idiot took his gun out of the bag and out of the case while still in the terminal.

Correct procedure is pick up your bags and exit the terminal. If he wanted to be sure his gun was still in the case, he should have gone to Security and checked it with them (because if wasn't, that would be the next stop anyway). Behavior needs to be appropriate to location. Why do so many people here fail to understand that?

Well, if they are going to arrest you for checking the contents of your checked luggage, while it is in the secure area where they are still responsible for it... then they better start letting people check in the security office!

I'm not prepared to label the offender an "idiot" until someone confirms that he actually opened the case and removed the firearm. The quote from the Police is a little ambiguous as to whether he even opened the case or not. I'm not sure how the law reads... but logic tells me I'm not brandishing anything I haven't wrapped my grubby little hands around.

I agree, yet, is it a reason to really over-react, once again...yeah, let's get the bomb squad rolling because a guy decided to check if his firearm was still where it should be...

maybe if there weren't so many "in house" thefts of peoples belongings, one wouldn't feel the need to check...I think you should be able to check, we're talking about a firearm here, not a T-Shirt...having to leave the terminal, then check only makes it harder to prove you didn't have it when you left

there should be an appropriate guideline in place, so that you may check that your firearm is still in it's case, the custody of the gun has been compromised, no telling what could be in that case

I know if I ever traveled, and had to check a firearm, I'm going to want to be 100% positive I have that firearm BEFORE I leave that terminal...I won't fault the guy for wanting to check, just the avenue he may have taken to do it

I've never traveled with a checked firearm, so I admit I don't know the proper procedure, but, is there is proper method to check BEFORE leaving the airport without a Level 1 breach being enacted?

When I got to VA on my current trip I waited until I got into my rental car to check my pistol case. When I return to LAX next weekend I'm just going to assume until I'm in my rental car there.

Not worth all the attention and silliness this guy encountered...
