    bad gun shop experience

    detailed rant:

I went to this gunshop today, which I believe is called Ling's Sports. I noticed it while on my way home from work and thought since I got off early I would check it out. Especially since I am planning on getting my first pistol soon.

Well I go in there and the owner guy is on the phone chatting away. So I look at all of his inventory and notice that he has a Glock 19, SW MP9, and an XD9. The three guns i am considering after my first .22LR.

So i wait a few more minutes and he finally asks if he can help me in a somewhat gruff voice. I know I look like I'm only 16, especially since I was wearing basketball shorts and a shirt (I like to change right after work since I have to be in a lab all day). But that was pretty messed up to start off. Well I ask him if i can handle the 3 pistols. So he opens it up the display and just hands it to me. So I decided that I would check to see if it was unloaded; cocked back the slide on the XD, and he let me have it.

He got pissed that I cocked the slide and said "what are you doing don't cock the slides thats bad for the gun! You don't cock the slide unless you are going to use it!" Stuff like that...I suppose thats true but I still wanted to check the way the gun feels. Next I ejected the magazine and he got made about that too, so i push the magazine back in and hand it to him. He takes it and ejects the mag himself and said that i shouldn't do that and while he is handling the pistol the barrel was pointed at me (I was pissed in my head).

So I asked him what the main differences between the guns are and he straight up they are all the same plastic junk. And he said they weren't accurate either. And started telling me how 9mm are hard to shoot and that I wanted a good shooter to get a .45 or a .38 super. Now i know those are good for experienced shooters , but this is my first handgun and I explained that to him and he said "You should get a 1911 or berretta for my first gun and that the other three "plastic" guns will break and are hard to fix."

I know things will break with time, but I know that the Glock has been through all kinds of tests. I know the XD and the MP might be hard to fix right now since they are relatively new, but I'm almost certain that they are supposed to be pretty good.

I asked: "do you have any pre-lock Smith and Wesson Revolvers?" and he looked at me like i was a moron. (maybe he just didn't understand or hear me correctly?)

I asked if he carries the sig p6 and he asked "Why would i want a used gun like that?" (I don't know they seem kind of cool and since I'm on a budget.)

I asked: "Do you carry any reduced recoil 00 buckshot?" HE said there was no such thing and that the best buck shot are the magnum loads. So I asked: "what brands did you carry?" And he said what does it matter what brands we have I they are all the same and shoot the same 9 pellet junk... (someone please tell me that this isn't true? they can't be the same...same idea?)

The next thing he does is start ranting about how i should trust him and get a 1911, because he is a weapons designer and has designed millions of weapons for the government and whatever. and He keeps telling me crap about how he can do 1 inch groups at 50 yards a with a bone stock 1911 GI or any 1911 for that matter. (maybe he did design weapons and can shoot that well, but I don't care what you can do. I went there to buy a handgun.)

Anyways this was no way to talk to a potential customer. But I stuck around to look at some of the rare stuff I've never seen.

If anyone is interested he has 3 sks is stock 2 of them are Norincos. He has an HK PS9 never seen one of those and never heard of them either, but It looked pretty interesting. Mind you he has cool stuff, but was mean and arrogant towards me. Maybe older looker people will have better luck than myself, but he will not get my business.

Maybe I'm just being a brat, but my over all impression is that they don't care about my business.

    end rant.

Everyones an expert when it comes to guns. LOL

I would recommend a 9mm for your first pistol..light recoil and pretty accurate. If the military thinks the 9mm is good for them then it should be good for most anyone, right?

    Hk USP 9
    HK P3000
    M&P
    Glock
    SIG

These are all good quality weapons and don't be discouraged about the polymer frames They are the latest in technology ( since the 60's )and 99.9% of shooters will never wear it out or break it. I would suggest getting together with some friends so you can try their pistols or go to a range and rent several pistol you are interested in over a few weeks. Shoot em and see what feels best for you.
I recommend the HK's ( yes I'm an HK freak ) but the bottom line is what feels good to you and what you like. A good gun shop should be interested in whats right for you and not push his beliefs or style at you.

Next time, ask him how he wants you to handle his guns.

As for the rude answers, unacceptable.

Anyways, go sign up as a membership to your local range that rents out guns and decide from there.

Crap happens...now go buy a Glock!

Yeah, that guys a character. Almost as tempermental as the owner of La Puente Range. Were those the $500 Chinese SKS's from the special guard? The chrome ones.

Sounds like you encountered a buncha bullsh*t.

When i sense that crap around the corner i simply leave. I will not tolerate ppl that want to treat customers like that. With the price of gas, ammo, guns, and CA laws there's no room for crap like that. Unfortunately, you'll probably see it again. Find a friendly dealer - you'll probably use them again.

I've encountered the same prob when i was younger. Last i checked, my pictures of dead presidents are just as green as that of older folks. Except, when i walk out the door without spending them, I (just like you) tell everyone else out there why i didn't part with my $$$.

I'm not sure if they were from special guard. All i noticed was that one was a norinco with a woodstock and the other norinco had an ATI dragonuv stock ( i think)...as i was fondling that he said they were paratroopers? I'm no sks expert...as i only own a 59/66 and come to think of it the 3rd one was a 59/66 just like mine but in better condition.

No, you shouldn't have asked first. He should have racked the slide, removed the mag and made sure the gun wasn't loaded before he handed it to you, and than you should have done the same. Period. When one hands a gun to another, they should make sure the gun is unloaded. Period. The "handee" should make sure himself. Period. This is gun 101, only exception I would be comfortable with is a high end revolver that may end up getting a cylinder line/mark, in that case a smart shop has a cable tie on the hammer.

Wow. Sorry you had to put up with that.

Unfortunately I've observed a certain personality type that seems to pop up once in awhile in association with our sport, and what you wrote described it pretty well.

Locking back the slide on a pistol will not harm it. Period.

Allowing the slide to slam back into battery on an empty chamber can be detrimental to high end 1911s. On those you need to ease the slide back into battery.

I have friends who run dry fire practice with their Glocks several times a week (the act of functioning a firearm without ammo). They have had zero problems.

In fact, I have first hand knowledge of one person, and indirect knowledge of a second person, who have run thousands of rounds through their Glocks - without cleaning - without a single malfunction. I love my Wilson Combat CQB 1911, but I could never get away with that without a malfunction.

And dropping mags... Oh boy. You'll do that with extreme prejudice in any serious gun class.

Regarding the buckshot, I've been through a couple of multi-day tactical shotgun classes, and believe me low recoil tac loads are your friend!

Magnum rounds have their place, but right this very moment my home defense weapon has Federal low recoil OO Buck in the mag tube. Not that it matters to me, but low power rounds are supposed to have a slightly lower risk of punching through walls, for what that's worth.

There may be some subtle differences between brands in how well the shot will pattern, but I doubt most people would notice.

I suggest you find a better class of gun shop.

City of Hacienda Heights is where Ling's is located. Go up Hacienda Blvd. til you hit Colima, and it's on the right side.

LPFR does not allow any OL rifles. I'm sure he's a great guy, but he frowns upon the OLL movement.

So does anyone have a specific shop they like to frequent? Somewhere around my area...Rowland heights, Hacienda Heights, La Habra...? I've been to Bain and Davis in San Gabriel and they seemed pretty nice, and there were a grip of employees.

And I love the sign i see when i walk in... I DON'T CALL THE 911 (or police...i forget)

If he didn't lock the slide open, eject the mag and show you that the weapon is clear before handing it to you, then the weapon is loaded ... every weapon you handle is loaded ... until you make sure it isn't ... which means locking open the slide, ejecting the mag and checking to make sure the weapon is clear.

If the gun can't handle the functions it was designed for, then it's piece of crap. On the other hand, don't use the slide lock to release the slide. Hold the slide lock down with your thumb and rack the slide with your other hand. It's how all the cool kids are doing it now ...

Your actions were correct. Spend your money elsewhere.
