Understandable, but the barrel extension might not be stainless.
It is entirely possible that they screwed an 8620 heat treated steel barrel extension onto your stainless barrel.Comment

Unless it's passivated, stainless steel can also corrode as the iron on the surface reacts with the atmosphere.Ty | 815.246.AR15 (2715) | info@midwestpx.com

7 days is a long time if the storage conditions are absolute crap… You should see what a little natural sweat from hands can do to a Remington bolt knob overnight if you give it the right condition to corrode.Originally posted by highintelThe way that you guys are justifying this makes me think this is something that is normal. For $180 I would expect the extension to resist rust for more than 7 days. It hasn't even been installed or mounted it just sat in a box. How do you avoid this? Is the melonite coated version a better option? This company is killing me with how long it takes for them to respond.
Also do more research before you start wasting money…. Salt bath nitriding (melonite) does absolutely nothing for corrosion protection/resistance on stainless steel. Only benefit is added surface hardness and lubricity.ExtremeXComment

You avoid this by keeping the barrel oiled until ready for use.
Every barrel I have ever purchased came in a sealed bag and had oil or some other protective coating slathered all over it.
Wipe the rust off, oil it up and seal it in a bag.
Keep it in the safe, if you have a dehumidifier.Comment

It's a Green Mountain barrel. Here is part of their warranty.
Important: Rifle grade stainless steel is more resistant to rust and corrosion than blued steel, but it is not rust proof. To ensure your stainless steel barrel remains in superior condition, clean, oil, and store it in the same manner as a blued steel barrel.
Did you clean, oil or store it?It's not PTSD, it's nostalgia.Comment

I'd start off with some light penetrating oil and a stiff bristle nylon brush before steel wool. Toothbrush might work. The initial stages of surface rust can often be removed using light oil without much abrasive force needed. Something mildly abrasive like steel wool will start to put a shine on bead blasted metal without much effort.Originally posted by highintelI will take some Hoppes oil and 0000 steel wool to it later. I know I sound like a complete rookie, which is fine as long as I learn something. The lip area that has darkened above the chrome extension, will that dark surface come out as well? Will that coating be effected by taking a steel wool to it?U.S. Navy (Retired) 1994-2015Comment
