I just posted this because I have personal experience with the wounding capabilities of a .22lr bullet,so I find the "science" of this experiment informative.

And the fact that I see an overwhelming amount of people disregard it's capacity to be a self defense tool.

I was shot 3 times with a .22 short. I have a rod and 4 pins in my femur from one of those shots. the .22 round is no joke almost died that night.

I guess it is because there is a difference in stopping the threat and killing the threat. The purpose of HD is to stop the threat and a heavier caliber perhaps has a better chance. Just my $0.02.

The .22LR was a common deer hunting (poaching) caliber during the depression. My granddad fed his family with nothing but a .22 and a 12 gauge. He shot many deer with the .22, but he did say it was a good way of developing your tracking skills since they will run a long ways before going down.

This is somewhat accurate,however,unless a direct hit is made on the central nervous system even heavier calibers can be ineffective in stopping a determined attacker. My personal experience is that there was no sensation upon an initial hit in soft tissue (I was shot in the abdomen & the round passed thru my body completely).

Shot placement is far more critical than caliber choice IMHO. And,as in the case of hunting animals,such as deer,even a kill shot which destroys vital organs (lungs,heart,liver) animals can be capable of running quite a long distance (or continued threat,in the case of a human attacker) before succumbing to their injuries.

Friend whose mom was an ER nurse said .22 wounds were some of the nastiest. Bullet just tumbles around and makes quite a mess of the body. However, this is a bit of a crap shoot IMO. I don't have any doubt that a .22LR is a killer round and with the accuracy and easy handling of the round, it would be easy to dump a well-placed mag of .22 into a bad guy. For defense though, I wouldn't want to rely on a rimfire primer and I would prefer a heavier bullet.

This is the best argument I have heard against .22 as a defensive round.
The lack of reliability in primers/function in a semi auto platform is exactly what would keep me from choosing or using a .22 as a defensive or offensive weapon. The lethal capabilities of the round itself is not the issue to me,it is the lack of consistency in the rounds performance (not cycling semi autos,different velocities,duds) that is a deal breaker.

In real life, I have seen people killed dead with a .22, it's no joke. Respect the firearm and the ammo.

I like that picture of the IDF with the Ruger 10/22. Read that they would shoot mob leaders in the knee caps to get violent groups to think twice about their mayhem.

To whatever extent that's true they'd use it like you would slaughter a hog, which is also a favorite use of .22. You get a .22 revolver, walk right up to somebody, push it in their ear and pull the trigger. No brass is left behind, and it's somewhat quiet.

But again, just because they'll die eventually of that wound doesn't mean it's a good self defense option. As always...

1. Just because it's a .22 doesn't mean you can't follow the safety rules. That sucker can kill you or a loved one.
2. Any gun is better than no gun if you need one in a hurry.
3. Given a choice in a self defense situation you would want a long gun, or failing that a centerfire pistol, or failing that a rimfire pistol.

Every argument really comes back to that same conclusion.
