Hinkley used a junk $75 Rohm revolver. A riccochet almost killed Reagan, permanently disabled James Brady, and laid out a police officer and secret service.

From a .22. The Devastator bullets only worked on Brady.

There's a reason why the mob used this caliber a lot.

Same here. Self inflicted, and gangs mostly. It seems a .22 causes more internal damage than you think. While it won't knock someone down it does cause some nasty internal bleeding. It's a lot like s stab wound. You can't tell what's damaged until a doctor gets in there.

Wound one, two more have to carry him out. That takes three of them out of action with a single shot.

It looks like the 10/22 is back in action with the IDF as of March 2013. http://palestinemonitor.org/details....2971y6t3mbv9ie

I've been to 14 shootings over the last 7-8 years.
Whenever a .22 was used and the hits were center mass the victim didn't survive.
It doesn't mean much as far as comparisons, conclusions etc. nothing more than simple on the job observation, but I do respect the round and it's killing potential.
They enter the body and bounce off bones, tumble and have made for some rather impressive x-rays..

I have a sr22 in the drawer next to my bed. Full dump into a BG is fine by me. Minimizes the chances of possible strays going fully thru the walls into a neighbors apt.

The 22 can be effective---if not just immediately, sometime after. Back in the day, we didn't have the heap of small guns like we have now. Back when I used to manage gunstores, the back-up gun to have was the 38 snubby. I carried a Browning P35 9mm Hi Power pistol, but wanted something thin and smaller for in the pocket---tried the Seecamp 32---spent a lot of money to get one---wasn't reliable. The snubby was just too wide after trying a number of small guns, went with the little Walther TPH 22 in stainless---wifey wanted one, so now we have two. Mine was very reliable (as was the other) and I carried it for years (still lives under the coffee table---no kids around)---I slip it into my back pocket sometimes when I'm in the yard...
As for living off the meat a 22 can produce---during the Great Depression, in the SFV, my old friend Jack (RIP) said that after school he went huntin'---single-shot Stevens rifle, he said. His father who did odd jobs on the farms that were there back when, would buy him a box of 22 shorts (cheaper than long or LR) and expected 50 small animals for each of the 50 rds in the box. He said that was the only meat his family had during those years.
I have a lot of respect for the little 22...

I have seen 6 mule deer go down by way of a .22 LR rifle.
There is no doubt it can be a lethal caliber.
I wouldnt think it is the ultimate caliber for large game hunting or seld defense, but if it is what you have then it is what you use.
Even more impressive is the mis under stood .22 Magnum.
It can and is used with good results as a self defense weapon.

Yeah, I have a .22 Magnum. Surprisingly accurate for a cheap gun, and an important difference from .22 LR - you can get true jacketed hollow points.

He shot many deer with the .22, but he did say it was a good way of developing your tracking skills since they will run a long ways before going down.
Then he wasn't shooting them in the right spot. I've seen deer drop in their tracks with one round of .22lr hitting them properly. I've lung shot a buck with a .308 and it still ran up hill 30 yards and then down hill another 50 yards but, a .22lr to the brain will keep a deer from taking another step.

So, what kind of .22mag do you have that's "cheap"? Most .22mags I've seen are neither cheap nor inexpensive.

I love the 22LR cartridge. I carry it as a CCW, can make accurate shoots in a heart beat and believe in the power to penetrate skull and down a viable threat if need be. However I don't kid myself and have the need to make others believe the way I believe.

If one were to shoot 100 people in the head with a 22LR, 98 of them would die the other 2 would be a vegetable. YMMV.

I can tell you out on the ranches when a local butcher comes out to kill the winter meat supply they bring a 22lr. From a 1200 pound steer to a pig they all go to the ground without moving.

My two guns that I would carry if I left the ranch because of fire or other calamities will be a 22 pistol and a 22 rifle.
