    Destroying my Bullet Button

Let me get this out of the way, I do not live in california.

I've had difficulty removing my bullet button. I suspect dirt, time and loctite are the culprits. I've gotten several things in there including .22 case cut to fit the castle nut and a .223 case cut the same. I've gotten good purchase and it won't budge. I'm at the point now where I'm willing to use a bigger hammer.

what I'm wondering from all of you, is do I have to drill out the BB (which is more work) or can I simply snap the mag catch tab in half, then unscrew it ( I figure I will be damaging the mag catch either way). Currently the mag catch wont come out far enough to spin, it gets caught in the raised circle on the lower. if i broke it in half, say, drilled it a bit then wacked it with a punch, would it spin right off freeing the BB? I've only got a dremel, so my power tools are limited.

    Thanks.

Try some heat from a soldering iron to help soften the thread locker, then make a stronger tool. I made this one from a snap-on screw driver tip and about 20 mins grinding with a dremel.

          Heat guns are really cheap.

Soldering iron on the mag release will help heat up and loosen the loctite. Congrats on getting the fork out of the commie state.

You could push the middle part of the bullet button hard enough to get the mag catch to poke out from the other side and cut it off. Collateral damage sucks but it's an idea.

That was my initial idea. If I am going to spend any money in this venture it might as well be in a new mag catch with "molon labe" laser etched into it.

Thanks, I'm actually proud to be out of CA, it was like a bad relationship, where you knew you had to go, but were just afraid to take that first step.

Yes, and SDgarrick is really cheap, i figure 15-20 bucks for a heat gun or 15-20 for a new magcatch, with a nifty *EDIT: hmm $12 for a heat gun.

I feel giddy just trying with my hodgepodge of hand tools.

I had a similar problem a while back. One of the original set ups where the button was metal and needed filing to fit.

Ended up cutting across the top (dremel) and slowly nipping pieces off until I got to the threaded nut. That's when I was able to take the nut off and the button. Took about 30 minutes.

I think I will just grind it down with a dremel and try to fabricate a proper tool using a slotted screwdriver.

If you make a tool you should not have to grind anything down.

Honestly, I think a bic lighter will generate enough heat.
Hold the rifle with the BB facing down.
Then keep the tip of the flame about half an inch from touching the metal.
                            That should melt the locktite.

If the bullet button was installed by factory (SIG, S&W, Colt, Bushmaster), they very likely used thread locker and a lot more difficult to remove.

Take a blow torch to the bullet button, heat-up/burn-off the thread locker than you are good to go with tool to remove it... just make sure to wear a mitten glove to protect yourself from the heat.
