    Rant -"semi-automatic handgun"

Been hearing this for the past year or two with coverage of handgun crimes, etc., but with the Sparks, NV shooting, EVERY newscast i have heard stresses that a "SEMI-AUTOMATIC handgun was used in the shooting". So irritating, more irritating than "undocumented immigrant" by far. Pushing the agenda through language, scare the ignorant and make only revolvers legal for handgun ownership is the idea.

Actually, most semi-auto handguns use recoil/inertia to cycle. Most semi auto rifles use a gas porting /piston system. Recoil operation is an operating mechanism used in locked-breech, autoloading firearms. As the name implies, these actions use the force of recoil to provide energy to cycle the action. Other operating systems are Blow forward operated, blowback operated, gas operated, and chain.

Glad I'm not the only one who get's pissed when the news exaggerates this term when talking about any kind of shooting.
I hate to school my girlfriends Grandma at the dinner table not long ago. She brought up one of these shootings and said how she cannot believe all these people are allowed to buy Semi-automatic guns. She couldn't believe they were legal.

I asked her what she thought "semi-automatic" was. Yep, you guess it. She thought it meant fully automatic

FAAAAACK .... I was pretty disturbed. Typical BS media hyping up stories with exaggerations of the term.

Once they get rid of the semi autos they will work on the revolvers.

Ed McGivern (trick speed shooter) used revolvers because semi-automatic pistols were "too slow" for his fast shooting.

Okay, I'm not getting it. Why is the phrase "SEMI-AUTOMATIC handgun" "irritating" to you?
It seems like an accurate description of a particular type of handgun.
                      Maybe I'm just slow tonight.

You forgot about the "AR-15 Shotgun".

The phrase itself isn't the issue...how the media uses the phrase is the issue. As Indetruck pointed out in the story about his grandmother, most people who know nothing about guns think that "semi-automatic" means either full auto or "military style". Unfortunately, the media doesn't take the time to make the distinction between semi-auto and full auto (most reporters probably don't know the difference either) and as a result, the entire category of semi-automatic firearms gets demonized.
