I bought my dad his first AR for Christmas in 2011. It's got him into the shooting scene a bit more. It's something else that he, my brother and I all get together to do.

thoughts on gift for Dad?

A number of guys your Dad's age (myself included) have great memories hunting but have no desire to shoot animals or birds anymore. I couldn't do it unless I need them for food.
When I fish, I catch and release.
He might really like that .22 lever action a lot!
But I tell ya, his favorite gift would be time spent with you.
If it's a .22 rifle or a fishing pole or you putting up with going golfing with him on a regular basis, any activity that puts the two of you together more often would be a true gift.Comment

If you end up not getting him a gun, maybe have that pic you talked about professionally blown up and framed for him, seeing that might get his gun juices flowing a bit. I researched and mounted and framed all of my grandpas medals from WW2, and dads medals from "Nam" along side mine from Somalia in a shadowbox with our names, rank and years of service. It took awhile to get everything together but he cried when he saw it. Going shooting is our favorite trips now with my sons. Good Luck"People sleep peacefully in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."Comment

I was going to post this:
If you need to take a hunter safety class do it together. My kids are grown and it's good when they can find time to do things with me.People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

Do target shooting and supprise him with tannerite in one of the targets.Originally posted by beccibooWhy make it clear when there is an agency that can make up and enforce their own laws? Its one of those things where you need to make the personal decision as to whether you want to be right or free. Is it worth it to you?

We had dinner the other night and the topic came up, he even suggested he should pick up something new since the "ol ruger is slow to reload" in his words. You hit it on the head, he doesn't want to go hunting. when I asked if he wanted to do the hunting class with me he just sort himmed and hawed and said it didn't interest him. On the bright side I showed him a clip of me doing some action pistol/carbine shooting and his eyes lit up. He's going to come to the range with me and get his action pistol bay "cert" done at Sac Valley so we can shoot together. I should get a holster for his Blackhawk and some .357 ammo to see him shoot that thing.A number of guys your Dad's age (myself included) have great memories hunting but have no desire to shoot animals or birds anymore. This thread has me wanting to go a couple different ways...
1. classic 20" AR build
2. 22 or .357 rossi lever action
3. more modern pistol
definitely want to get that picture enlarged and maybe even colorized since it was a black and white. Thanks for the suggestions this was perfect input!!just happy to be here. I like talking about better ways to protect ourselves.
